🗳 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 The preliminary results of the European elections indicate that it will be more difficult to organize a majority for a possible second term of office for Commission President von der Leyen. In particular, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗘𝗨) 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.   In a turbulent time for the global economy, only a strong EU can vigorously defend European interests. Europe needs the completion of the capital market and banking union as well as bold steps towards building joint European defense capabilities. 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲'𝘀 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻'𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸.   The strong performance of populist and Eurosceptic parties in particular does not make this any easier, but neither does it make it impossible. The pro-European forces must now stand together all the more and not give in to the populist siren songs. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗞𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱.

Ahead of the EU elections, Russian foreign interference is a given.   To mark the 39th anniversary of Europe Day, Dominika Hajdu, Director, Centre for Democracy & Resilience speaks with Roger Hilton to outline the troika of threats from the Kremlin, recent findings of the GLOBSEC Trends 2024 report, and disinformation threats ahead of the June EU elections.   GLOBSEC Trends 2024 data snapshot and full report - https://bitly.cx/7tDe8   On average, 72% in CEE believe their country’s membership in NATO makes it less likely that a foreign nation will attack them, 63% of CEE respondents would also like the EU to start building its own army to limit dependence on the United States.   52% of CEE respondents would want Ukraine to become part of the EU, NATO, or both. The numbers, however differ to a great extent – from 66% in Lithuania to 30% in Slovakia.   The Kremlin’s disinformation is not resonating across most of citizens, but Bulgaria, Slovakia, and, to some extent, Hungary are the exceptions. In my today piece for the Gulf International Forum, I argued that #Iran's presidential election reveals increasing polarization in #Iranian society. The low turnout highlights how those previously critical of the government are now furthering their dissent by abstaining from voting. Meanwhile, the rise of fundamentalist #Jalili and the decline of the pragmatic #Ghalibaf among conservatives indicate that supporters of government are leaning towards more radical candidates.
