Despite its ornate architecture and olde-world charm, the small town of Inglewood on the Calder Highway, is often a thoroughfare, not a destination. Catherine and Barry Norman, owners of Fusspots Antiques, have been instrumental in changing that. Rather than fearing competition, they invited it in. They encouraged friends and fellow antiques dealers to open a shop in town – making a total of three collectibles stores. After that, two more followed suit. In the last 10-15 years, the antiques offering has become the pillar of Inglewood’s tourism direction. However, severe weather events in recent years have had a significant impact on visitor numbers, and anecdotal evidence is suggesting that more people are turning online to find vintage wares. We spoke to Catherine and Barry about shifting their business model and the importance of bricks-and-mortar shops for small towns.
