This is a big step towards reliable global broadband coverage, particularly for underserved and remote areas. Vodafone has been crucial in AST SpaceMobile's journey since 2018, acting as both a significant investor and technological partner. In 2023, they achieved remarkable milestones together, including the world's first 4G download speeds from space and the first-ever 5G voice call from space. With Vodafone's recent purchase of AST SpaceMobile's Block 1 BlueBird gateway, the collaboration is set to revolutionise connectivity by seamlessly routing voice, video, and data through low Earth orbit satellites to standard mobile phones, without additional hardware. This agreement also positions Vodafone alongside other major telecom players like AT&T and Verizon, striving to make dependable cellular broadband accessible to all. Deutsche Telekom announced the successful completion of an end-to-end trial of SMS send and receipt over GEO satellite. It is the first time in Europe that an operator’s terrestrial mobile network has been integrated into a satellite network to enable texting based on the 3GPP Release 17 specifications for Direct-to-Handset (D2H) connectivity. It will allow customers in white spots without any access to terrestrial network to send and receive text messages globally using GEO satellite connectivity.
