 Exciting News from Vodafone! We are thrilled to announce a groundbreaking achievement in mobile connectivity! Vodafone has successfully completed the first-ever space-based video call using 4G/5G smartphones and AST SpaceMobile satellites. This historic milestone was marked by a video call between our engineers in rural Wales and Margherita Della Valle, CEO of Vodafone Group, using standard Android smartphones connected directly to a satellite. This test paves the way for eliminating mobile coverage 'not-spots' and bringing reliable connectivity to even the most remote areas. While dedicated satellite phones have been around for a while, they are often bulky and expensive. Our direct-to-phone satellite service aims to provide a seamless mobile broadband experience without the need for satellite dishes. The AST SpaceMobile satellite used for this call is a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite, sitting at approximately 500km above the Earth's surface. This shorter distance allows for faster mobile data connections with acceptable speeds. The use of beamforming technology further enhances speed and reliability by precisely directing radio signals to their intended destination. We are proud to continue our legacy as the Nation’s Network, bringing connectivity to all parts of the UK. The use of satellites in conjunction with our land-based network will ensure customers have the coverage they deserve. The direct-to-smartphone satellite service will provide 4G and 5G broadband without dedicated satellite hardware, aiming to close coverage gaps in remote areas, with speeds up to 120 Mbps—surpassing existing satellite-based text-only services. Competitors like AT&T, Verizon, and SpaceX’s Starlink are also developing similar satellite-to-smartphone networks, but Vodafone’s test highlights its capability to provide full broadband services, rather than just text messaging or emergency features.

Coverage in "no coverage" areas... Vodafone have made the world's first video call, by using a completely unmodified smartphone, from a remote location. "We were using the only satellite service that can offer a full mobile experience with a normal device, so you get everything from voice to text to video data transmission, which is why we did a full video call," Vodafone's CEO Margherita Della Valle said in an interview. It is using AST SpaceMobile's five BlueBird satellites in low-Earth orbit to provide transmission speeds of up to 120 mbits per second for standard smartphones. In recent time, we saw major mobile operators and smartphone makers are competiting with each other in deploying satellite services to close gaps in network coverage and companies like Apple, Samsung and Google could able to use satellites to provide services such as emergency messaging services and share location using low-bandwidth connections. In other hand, as SpaceX is also testing Starlink satellites to provide text services, with voice and data to be added in the future...was trying to figure out how Vodafon's service will differ from Starlink. Could able to see three maor differences. - Device compatibility: Vodafone have made a video call using a regular smartphone, while Starlink's mobile connectivity currently requires a partnership with a carrier like T-Mobile and may not fully function on all standard phones without additional setup. - Coverage focus: Vodafone is specifically marketing their technology as a solution for places with no terrestrial network access, whereas Starlink's mobile connection may still require some level of existing cell tower signal in certain regions. - Satellite network: Vodafone is utilizing AST SpaceMobile's satellites for their video call demonstration, while Starlink operates its own network of satellites. #Vodafone #Starlink #worldtelecom #telecom #technology #satellite
