Today is International Women's Day.
I was recently on a client call which was, bar one participant, entirely female. The comment was made just how rare that is in IT. Working for an almost entirely female company for the last 2.5 years I guess I'd forgotten what it was like to be the only 'girl' in the room, and how surprised people were when I spoke - rather coherently and persuasively - about technology. Or how hard it was to earn my place as not just a skilled marketing practitioner but also a trusted IT specialist.
I always felt I had to work twice as hard, read three times more, prepare more thoroughly and defend my views flawlessly. There was never any room for error. Being writer comes with a fair dose of imposter syndrome. Writing for IT as a female? Multiply that to the power of 10.
I feel so grateful though to have been a part of the 'transition' of this industry and to see the value that women in tech have brought, to tempering it with an additional dimension of insight, to infusing a kind of social consciousness and awareness, to being the women that we ourselves needed half a generation ago.
I love my coterie of fabulous women, for their authenticity and fierce generosity of spirit. Cheers to them, and to all the other incredible women who are making waves, large and small wherever they are.
