The latest findings from the United Nations Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN IGME) highlight a significant achievement: the annual number of under-five deaths has dropped to 4.9 million in 2022, about half the number in 2000. This progress underscores the dedication of governments, organizations, communities, health-care professionals, and families to improving child survival. However, millions of children still die before their fifth birthday, especially among marginalized groups, signaling ongoing threats to child health and survival globally. Despite this progress, child mortality remains a pressing issue, exacerbated by inequities, crises, and conflicts. The report emphasizes the need for better, timely, and high-quality data to enhance our understanding and inform policy-making to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Addressing data gaps is crucial, particularly in regions with high child mortality rates, to prevent stagnation or reversal of the gains made. The commitment to ending preventable child deaths by 2030 requires increased investment in health services, improved data collection, and targeted interventions for the most vulnerable populations. Dear Partners, Colleagues and Friends,   Keeping up with our tradition of tackling behavioral perspectives of the average Pakistani on different aspects of public health challenges, we are pleased to share findings from the 12th Edition of our Health Cyber Letter series titled, "Under-five Child Mortality Rate in Pakistan"   In this edition, we delve into the insights provided by the United Nations Inter-Agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN IGME), a comprehensive exploration of health statistics across several regions of the world. It provides an interesting outlook into how children under the age of five fare in terms of their well-being, the metric being a metric is a vital indicator of a nation's overall health and well-being, reflecting the effectiveness of healthcare systems, socio-economic conditions, and public health policies.   It's crucial to recognize that behind these statistics are the lives of our youngest and most vulnerable citizens. Each number represents a child who didn't survive to see their fifth birthday, and a family enduring unimaginable loss. World Children’s Day: Highlighting the Disparity in Childhood Health Today is World Children’s Day- a reminder of our global responsibility to protect children’s rights and well-being. Despite progress, challenges remain: In under-served regions preventable diseases like pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria and malnutrition, still claim too many lives. Developed nations face rising childhood obesity, along with its long-term health consequences, and increased mental health challenges. All demand our attention. Children have never been at higher risk from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, stroke and mental health conditions.  We need to view health expenditures and other preventative measures as costs towards recognizing them as critical long-term investments.  This can only be achieved through financial collaboration with the private-sector and advocating in partnership with governments and communities to develop effective, inclusive and sustainable initiatives that place children and adolescents at the center of the NCD and mental health agenda. Today, at the World Economic Forum, AstraZeneca's Chief Strategy Officer, Marc Dunoyer, joined a UNICEF panel event alongside Deloitte, Novo Nordisk, and Z Zurich Foundation, to discuss the importance of placing children and young people at the heart of the global non-communicable disease (NCD) and mental health agenda. Our partnership with AstraZeneca’s Young Health Programme aims to create a youth advocacy movement to prevent NCDs. NCDs are a critical health issue, with the poorest communities and individuals affected the most. A new report released by UNICEF demonstrates the need to address systemic barriers to adolescent health now, to ensure that future generations do not face the burden of chronic disease. Our commissioned report on 'Harnessing system working to deliver better outcomes for children and young people' has been published. The report reveals that more than 40% of children across Cheshire and Merseyside are living in poverty. In 2020, just 6.1% of health expenditure across all healthcare providers nationally was spent on preventive care, with 80% of all local authority spending on children spent on late intervention. Services are more likely to react to harm as opposed to invest in preventative action. The report recommends that the Cheshire and Merseyside system works to embed: 1. Early Intervention 2. Incorporate Lived Experience 3. Support Community-Based Interventions 4. Utilise Evidence-Led Approaches 5. 🌍 World AIDS Day: A Story of Hope and Healing 🌍 At United Way of Will County, we’re proud to support our funded partner, Agape Missions, whose work changes lives every day. Today, on World AIDS Day, we want to share a story that reflects the power of compassion, collaboration, and resilience. Agape met a client who had been living with HIV for five years but was struggling to manage their health. Disengaged from medical care, homeless, and unaware of available support, this individual faced overwhelming challenges—no insurance, mental health concerns, and no reliable transportation. Through Agape’s Medical Case Management program, the client was met with unconditional love and unwavering support. Together, they addressed barriers one by one: ❤️ Reengaging in medical care and successfully adhering to appointments and medications. 🚗 Securing transportation to get to vital health services. 🏠 Finding affordable housing to create a stable foundation for wellness. 🧠 Connecting with mental health services to support overall wellbeing. 💊 Enrolling in medication assistance and insurance to ensure ongoing access to care. This journey hasn’t been easy, but with Agape’s support, this client has taken incredible strides toward a healthier, more stable life.
