Ever heard the story about the space race between the US & USSR? The Americans? Spent millions inventing a pen that worked in zero gravity. The Soviets? Used pencils. Now, who knows if this is true, but it’s a brilliant metaphor for “working smart” vs. “working hard.” And guess what? The same principle applies to recruitment. We’ve all been there – spending months refining recruitment processes, adding more steps, interviews, and fancy assessments. It’s like building the zero-gravity pen... super complex, time-consuming, and expensive. But sometimes, we just need to simplify. Take a step back and ask: Are we overcomplicating things? Could we achieve the same (or better) results by using the metaphorical pencil instead? Here’s the kicker: In recruitment, “working smart” doesn’t always mean adding more complexity. It means focusing on what really matters—finding the right people quickly, without unnecessary hurdles . Maybe it’s reducing interview stages, simplifying job ads, or leaning more toward automation. Whatever it is, the key is not to mistake effort for efficiency. So, are you recruiting with the million-dollar pen or the pencil?
