Last week team members from ASU Gammage, ASU 365 Community Union, and ASU Kerr gathered together at the first staff meeting of the new school year. With a fun icebreaker, presentations from each department, and special guest ASU Gammage Scholar, Giovanni Ferreira, it was a great way to connect as one big team and round out August!

To my friends in education and youth programs, I encourage you to take a few minutes to read this great article on cultural humility coauthored by my colleague Kelley Haynes-Mendez, PsyD. "Rather than focusing solely on knowledge of another person's cultural background, cultural humility proposes an openness and humility when engaging with individuals from a cultural background different than our own." When we consider that culture is constantly evolving as a result of many factors - ethnicity, socioeconomic status, family composition, community, religion, ability status, and more - its important to go beyond knowledge of a specific element of culture to create relationships and classroom environments that are also evolving and truly promote inclusion. Language Matters. Words Matters. A Common Language Matters. I've always said, Everything Begins With A Conversation... and this goes some way to explain how I realised how little I knew about the Deaf community and my pathological fear of getting things wrong. You could stop reading here if you like and jump right into the recording which has Sign Language Interpreters for ISL, BSL and ASL. Or for some some context keep going! I give it because I have been asked in a polite but 'curious' way, 'who is Janie Lazar to be putting out a docu-series of 'Conversations with Remarkable Codas.' so .. BACK IN 2019, I'd read about heard about JoJo who at the time, was having to look at leaving Ireland in search of work, not unusual for many but made me cross as Joanne Chester (JoJo) herself Deaf, loved working with young people. Fast forward, I worked with JoJo, through two sign language interpreters so she too could share her story as a TEDx (see link in comments) with a wider, global audience. THIS EXPERIENCE OF WORKING WITH JOJO WAS A REAL GIFT - TO ME! Hearing her on stage, not once but twice as JoJo also addressed our Youth audience. The best part, seeing the reaction of her parents also hearing her story, for the first time. Since then, I've used what I've learnt to learn more and contribute in different ways to help others like me, become more aware of how to be more inclusive, no matter how difficult we may find it. This docu-series of 'Conversations with Remarkable Codas' came about thanks to Dee Keogh (one of my 2020 TEDxDúnLaoghaire speakers) I met Catherine White, who not only facilitated all the introductions but interpreted the first 7 conversations in ISL. In this video, thanks for interpreting go to Catherine's sister Veronica White for interpreting in ISL, Kam Deo in BSL and John Arce in ASL. All recorded by me as an online novice zoomer, so unedited and not always at my best (but then, that's another story too). 🚀 Reflections on a Powerful Discussion: UKAT Tutoring Matters Series Webinar 🚀 Yesterday I had the privilege of participating in the UKAT Tutoring Matters Series Webinar on "Mid-Level Practitioners in Academic Advising/Tutoring - How Sustainable Are Our Roles?" It was a fantastic global discussion with diverse perspectives from around the world. We addressed the evolving challenges in higher education, touching on questions such as: What inspired your career in higher education? How have you navigated the challenges your students, staff, faculty, and stakeholders face? How have enrollment challenges affected your institutions? How does assessment help your professional practice? How have you worked on your well-being? Key themes like burnout, financial pressures, enrollment shifts, and the importance of student support and well-being were central to the conversation. It was inspiring to hear how different institutions are responding and the shared commitment to student success. A recurring takeaway was the critical need for self-care. In my closing statement, I shared: "People are fantastic, but systems are not. Take the time to look after yourself and those around you as the system might not. " A huge thank you to all the participants and organisers for facilitating this open, honest, and much-needed discussion. Let’s keep working together to support both our students and ourselves.

Three months ago, we started Nightlife Boost with Fermaten and Herning Kommune around a common concern of seeing many students living outside of Herning while studying in the city 😱 In one week, three experimental projects created through the program will participate during Kulturfest, which is very exciting! It also prompted us to reflect on our research, and the "compass of needs" based on insights from young residents, which our participants used to design their projects 🔎 It's worth detailing each piece of the compass a bit, since it probably applies to more nightlife scenes than just Herning's: . Amplify the local cultural mix 🏳️🌈/ If we want diversity, it needs to be visible. Otherwise, a tricky interplay of blind-spots can make a community look more monotonous than it actually is. . Challenge the urban and natural spaces 🌲/ There's untapped potential in the existing spaces within the city. It's tempting to claim for new infrastructure, but people can be as willing to re-think what a square, a boulevard or a pub can offer to them. . Mobilize people to be creative too 🤹♂️/ It's natural to expect active creative people to lead the scene. But attendees also seek for co-creation, and not just consumption. Enabling co-creation can be a strong attractor and binder. . Combine creativity with safety & inclusion 👐/ Creative content can also be intimidating. An enriching experience can come across as bombastic or exclusive if it doesn't overlap enough with different people's comfort-zones, so they dare to join. . Create the unexpected 💥/ Most of us value routines, but surprises can be refreshing and invigorating. An experience that defies your sense of possibility can be deeply inspiring and needed. We'll pay close attention to how the community reacts to this initiatives, and iterate on the future implementation of Nightlife Boost 2.0 🎯
Since March, we've been working alongside Fermaten and Herning Kommune to prepare a group of students and local residents to elevate the nightlife scene of Herning 👯 Nightlife Boost argued that, according to our research, the nightlife offer of a city is fundamental for locals (especially newcoming students) to value the city, its community, and the possibilities to live a good life 🌱 In one week, three experimental projects will be implemented during Kulturfest Herning. These initiatives have been designed following a compass of needs we boiled down based on our research, talking directly with young people of Herning. By using these leads, these projects have a much higher chance to be engaging 🎯 Check out the 5 elements of the compass!
