Hi, my new compound during my PhD has been published in Journal of Natural Products. Something that makes this research is interesting is: Ectoine was previously discovered in 1985 while 5-hydroxyectoine was found in 1988. Herein we discover new ectoine derivative, 2-homoectoine in 2023 in our lab in Germany. Why Ectoine is important? Ectoine is a central osmolyte in marine plankton due to its excellent cytoprotective traits and its multifunctional roles supporting the survival of microalgae and bacteria under unfavorable environmental conditions. The protective effect of ectoine toward several kinds of stresses stirred interest in biotechnology, pharmacy, and other fields including cosmetics. Also, its hydroxylated derivative, 5-hydroxyectoine, exhibits functions similar to ectoine. Therefore, the discovery of new ectoine derivatives is of importance for understanding structural diversity and the elucidation of physiological a protective abilities. Recently, the study of ectoine and structurally related compounds in phytoplankton has been limited due to a lack of suitable analytical methods for zwitterionic metabolites. The approach that we use: A ZIC-HILIC separation protocol coupled with HRMS/MS orbitrap-based molecular networking allowed us to identify the new ectoine derivative, 2-homoectoine (1). 1 is found in many algae including dinoflagellates, chlorophytes, and haptophytes. In axenic strains, the content of 1 is substantially lower. In accordance, we found that marine bacteria are prolific producers of the compound as well. This suggests that the microalgae with their associated microbiome have to be considered as sources of the compound. Increasing concentrations of the compound under high salinity suggest a role as a protectant against osmotic stress. ... I hope you have alot of fun reading our research. 😍😍

As a first LinkedIn post, I'm heartfelt to share the first full article we recently published at Food and Function, an RSC journal. The manuscript summarizes part of the results obtained for my PhD thesis, which for the past three years I have worked on unveiling time-related microbial signatures in "kombucha-based fermentation" of black tea, banana flower and grape juice, using untargeted metabolomics. The work had LC-ESIMS-data treatment assisted by different computational tools (MS-DIAL, MS-FINDER, GNPS and MetaboAnalyst) for chemical characterization and statistical analysis. Time and chemical profile of extracts were also correlated with their biological outcomes of antioxidant activity and their inhibitory effects against α-glucosidase. 👉 Our new paper in Metabolomics is now available, titled ‘High-quality identification of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) originating from breath’. Our paper explores how we collected and analyzed breath and background samples from a diverse population to pinpoint on-breath VOCs. 🖇️ Read the paper here: https://ow.ly/4Wt950TiNLV This study underpins our Breath Biopsy VOC Atlas®, an expanding reference database of the chemically identified, confirmed compounds in human breath. We are excited to share that a snippet of our VOC Atlas will soon be accessible for public use. This should help breath researchers identify VOCs in breath as well as improve standardization in the breath research field. ➰ Stay in the loop and gain access to our Atlas when its live by signing up to our waitlist here: https://ow.ly/iyez50TiNLW #biomarker #voc #breathanalysis #publication

I am excited to announce the publication of my first article titled 'A Research Agenda for Colostrum Supplement Manufacturing: Insights from a Scoping Review' in the African Journal of Biological Sciences. This work represents months of dedication, research, and collaboration. In this research, we make a deep dive into published literature on bovine colostrum supplements manufacturing and we propose a research agenda for further research. You can read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dddsd4xB. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the invaluable guidance and support of Meelan Roopa and Sara (Saartjie) Grobbelaar. A special thank you to Meelan Roopa and Sara (Saartjie) Grobbelaar for your mentorship, encouragement, and expertise throughout this journey. Your insights have been instrumental in shaping this research, and I’m deeply grateful for your continued support. I look forward to the next steps in exploring this field further and contributing to the advancement of knowledge in this research area. #Research #Colostrum #Manufacturing #Publication #Grateful #IndustrialEngineering #Sustainability

📰 Our new paper 'High-quality identification of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) originating from breath' has recently been published in the journal Metabolomics. In the latest edition of our Owlstone Insights Blog series, we interviewed the lead author of the paper, Wisenave Arulvasan, where she discusses the results of the paper, specifically regarding how this work has set the foundation for Owlstone Medical's Breath Biopsy VOC Atlas® 🌬️. 🌐 The VOC Atlas is an expanding database of the chemically identified, confirmed compounds in human breath. 'Knowing what’s truly on-breath allows for biological interpretation, such as deciphering the potential origins of the VOC, which biological pathways they may be involved in, and associations to disease in the literature. This enables the design of custom panels of VOCs known to be on-breath and pertinent to the disease population being studied.' You can read our interview with Wisenave here: https://ow.ly/Giwu50TiMRi Interested in delving into our new paper? Read here: https://ow.ly/cXRF50TiMRh #atlas #voc #interview
