Contractors Anticipate Prequalification for Mubarak Port Phase Two Shipping Arabia, September 8, 2024 — According to MEED magazine, the contracting sector is poised for the upcoming prequalification phase of the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port project, with companies eagerly awaiting formal invitations. Recent administrative changes, including the appointment of new senior port officials, have temporarily delayed proceedings as new incumbents settle into their roles. The anticipation builds amid concerns that invitations for prequalification may not be issued before the year's end. This next phase is critical for the port, which has seen substantial foundational investments yet remains non-operational due to incomplete installations from its first phase. Initially completed in 2014 at a cost of $1.2 billion, the first phase focused on structural developments such as site leveling, the construction of quay walls, berths, a navigation station, and port buildings. However, it lacked critical operational equipment like cranes, which has kept the port from functioning. The upcoming second phase, valued between 120 million and 130 million Kuwaiti Dinars, is slated to equip the port with necessary loading, unloading, and handling facilities. This phase will encompass extensive construction works including the development of container yards, the rear port area, infrastructure enhancements, and the installation of sophisticated safety and security systems. Experts project that a significant portion of the phase's budget, estimated between 90 and 100 million Kuwaiti Dinars, will be allocated for acquiring and installing state-of-the-art port equipment. This strategic expansion aims to transform the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port into a fully functional entity, thereby enhancing Kuwait's position as a competitive player in the global maritime logistics sector. The completion of this phase is poised to mark a significant milestone in the port's development, promising enhanced operational capabilities and increased maritime traffic efficiency. Sokhna Port Development Poised to Transform Egypt’s Maritime Landscape Shipping Arabia, June 3, 2024 — Major strides are being made at the Sokhna Port Development Project, according to Major General Mohamed Khalil, Director of the project. Under the Ministry of Transport’s guidance, this ambitious initiative has already engaged 228 Egyptian companies and created around 100,000 direct jobs. These efforts underscore the project’s significant impact on local employment and industry. During a guided tour, Khalil highlighted the project's infrastructure advancements, including the completion of a 17-kilometer network of robust concrete roads within the port area and a 30-kilometer railway system designed for high-speed and diesel trains. This rail network aims to enhance the efficiency of goods movement, reflecting the project’s broader logistical ambitions. Khalil also pointed out the innovative excavation techniques employed at the site, where 120 million cubic meters of land have been moved to construct new ship basins, with an additional 10 million cubic meters planned. The project has adopted land drying methods to replace traditional dredging, significantly reducing costs and environmental impact, with Egyptian firms achieving what amounts to 25 million cubic meters of traditional dredging. This development project is transforming Sokhna Port into the largest facility on the Red Sea, part of Egypt’s wider goal to become a global hub for trade and logistics. The plan includes extending the port’s berth by 18 kilometers, increasing the total to 23 kilometers at a depth of 18 meters, and expanding the trading yard area to over 10.6 square kilometers. Further enhancements include the integration of the port’s infrastructure with national transport networks, adding 17 kilometers of railway to an existing 22 kilometers. This network will connect with the high-speed electric train service linking Sokhna with Alamein and Marsa Matrouh, and the construction of a 17-kilometer arterial road to improve access to the port’s berths. The expansion and modernization of Sokhna Port represent a critical component of Egypt’s strategy to fortify its maritime capabilities and economic growth, positioning the country as a pivotal player in the global maritime industry.
