MDPI Singapore had the privilege of meeting with Prof. Swee Hock Yeo, Associate Professor at the NTU School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and our esteemed Editorial Board Member of JMMP MDPI. Prof. Yeo graciously shared his perspectives on JMMP’s growth and future potential. While JMMP is still relatively new compared to more established journals, he highlighted its steadily improving impact factor, which underscores the benefits of Open Access (OA) publishing in expanding the journal's reach and influence within the academic community. In our discussion, Prof. Yeo stressed the growing importance of OA publishing and the need for JMMP to maintain a strong focus on publishing high-quality research. He also suggested that increasing the journal’s presence at academic conferences could further enhance its visibility and attract more top-tier contributions, driving greater impact and citations. We extend our sincere gratitude to Prof. Yeo for his thoughtful insights and constructive feedback. On Friday, June 14, Olin College President Gilda Barabino will deliver the Mellor Lectureship keynote address at the inaugural summit of HBCU Engineering Deans, hosted by University of Michigan College of Engineering on the University of Michigan campus. Titled "Forging Futures Together by Strengthening Collaborations," this milestone event aims to forge a stronger link between premiere HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) and Big 10+ engineering institutions – pooling diverse perspectives, encouraging innovation, and unlocking the vast potential of an integrated engineering academy. In her address, President Barabino will talk about how we can change the face and future of #engineeringeducation and #research to reflect a scientific enterprise that includes everyone, including historically marginalized groups. She will also highlight the need and the vision to look upon an array of smaller institutions, conferences, and knowledge-shares, as key places from which this transformation can and is already occurring. "There are important lessons that we can all learn from #HBCUs and their cultures of high support and high expectations. To do this, we must see conferences and engagements like this summit as part of a constellation model, not a hub-and-spoke model. Too often, we observe that larger institutions like the Big 10+ see themselves as the hub from which spokes of knowledge arrive at smaller institutions, including HBCUs. In order to address the shortage of skilled chip design engineers in Europe #ESEDTU has teamed up with TU Munich (D), Tampere University (FI), Royal Institute of Technology (S) and MINES (F) to build a joint Master’s degree program across various universities, named “Edu4Chip”. The goal of the cooperation is to establish a joint study program in circuit design with a chip design project including tape-out as a core element. The resulting program is meant as a blueprint for future universities who wish to join effort and to offer an aligned program that is open for exchange. To reach this goal, the partners aim to offer the baseline chip, which is developed in the project as a template for students to design and tape out their IP. Dedicated on-line lectures and material of other selected lectures might be published for use at other universities or for learning-on-the-job. Next Summer (W34) #ESEDTU will organize the first of three Summer Schools to introduce the project’s capabilities.

“I hope the grant money will start a pipeline that will continue past the grant award,” said Harris. “I really want these kids to learn what advanced manufacturing is; it’s a very broad term. It can mean sustainability, it can mean green engineering, it can also mean additive manufacturing — really anything that improves the efficiency of manufacturing. I also want them to understand that you don’t have to get an engineering degree — there are multiple routes to go into this field. RWTH is proud to announce the establishment of the endowed chair of “Security Research and Sustainability Assessments in Strategic Foresight,” funded by the TÜV Rheinland Foundation 👍 This new junior professorship marks a significant step in integrating security and sustainability considerations into early-stage technology development, reflecting the increasing importance of these aspects in an ever-complex society facing both technological and non-technological risks. Despite its growing relevance, security research has yet to be firmly established as an academic discipline in Germany. In response, RWTH Aachen University, in collaboration with TÜV Rheinland Group, is addressing this need by creating the junior professorship “Security Research and Sustainability Assessments in Strategic Foresight” within the Fakultät für Maschinenwesen der RWTH Aachen University. The new professorship will be part of the Chair of Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components PEM RWTH Aachen University, led by Professor Achim Kampker, and will closely collaborate with the Institute for Technology Analysis and Foresight in the Field of Security Research, headed by Professor Michael Lauster, as well as the Fraunhofer Institute for Technological Trend Analysis (INT).
