We know that grief is deeply personal, and support groups may not be for everyone. For many, however, joining a local chapter offers an invaluable source of comfort, community, and connection. No one comes to judge or offer unsolicited advice; instead, bereaved families gather to provide a safe and compassionate space to reflect, share, and honor the life of their child, grandchild, or sibling. If you decide to attend a local meeting, we ask only one thing—join at least three meetings before deciding if it’s the right fit for you. The holidays can be a joyful time, but for many older adults, they can also bring feelings of grief and loss. In this interview, Nancy McCranie, Director of Volunteer and Bereavement Services for Hospice Austin spoke with FOX 7 Austin about compassionate ways to talk to older adults in your life about their feelings of grief during this season. This is part of a series by Aging Services Council of Central Texas. Key tips include: * Listening with empathy: Let them share their feelings without rushing to "fix" them. * Acknowledging their loss: Simple recognition of their emotions can be deeply comforting. * Using these conversation starters: Who are you missing this holiday season? What are you most grateful for about your time with them? Can you share a special story or favorite memory about them? Let’s help make this season one of connection and support. #griefsupport #Holidays #CompassionInAction #HospiceCare #PalliativeCare #hospiceaustin #austinpalliativecare

During this Bereaved Parents Awareness Month, we continue to acknowledge the challenges and heartache that our bereaved parents face daily after the unimaginable loss of their child(ren). We also want to raise awareness about the importance of empathy from those supporting the bereaved. Many bereaved parents have shared accounts of unhelpful comments from their support networks. Our society is not well-versed in grief, and these comments often come from a place of discomfort, awkwardness, or lack of knowledge. This RSA short is a light-hearted way to explain the difference between “Empathy” and "Sympathy”. Some important things to remember: • Cliches or silver linings are never helpful. • Don’t rush their grief. • Don’t tell them what they should feel or do. • Don’t try to fix them. If you’re a bereaved parent, share this with your support network as a gentle, light-hearted reminder. https://lnkd.in/gczXj8Df #ambernt #besideyouingrief #saytheirname #conversationsthatmatter #bereavedparentawarenessmonth #childlosssupport #neverforgotten #empathy

The Amarillo Mayor and City Councilmembers have proclaimed November 21st as Children's Grief Awareness Day. This day will serve as an opportunity to reflect on our youngest and most resilient community members and their grief reactions, often causing them to be referred to as the "forgotten mourners." The Children's Bereavement Estimation model says that from 2018-2022, approximately 1400 children and youth were newly bereaved by the death of a PARENT or SIBLING in the Amarillo area. Further, it estimates that the number of bereaved children in our region will continue to be about 2% more than the state average. Yet these numbers only encompass the most immediate familial relationships. There are so many more. Picture the classroom of a child that you know; on average, at least one of the children in that class will be bereaved by the death of a PARENT or SIBLING. They will sit in isolation, comparing holiday gatherings, family vacations, and the daily normalcy of school pick-up and drop-off UNLESS we make room for them. We are here to help them navigate the most challenging trials alongside their support system, strengthening the family unit for generations. Will you help those around you and refer them to our FREE services? #TheRoadtoHope #Grief #Loss #SupportGroups #Families #Resilience
