This is big news in the green hydrogen space and congrats to Air Products and Total Energies! We have likewise witnessed a material ramp in commercial negotiations from producers seeking supply. For those who talk in green ammonia volumes this is over 400,000 tons p.a. Why is this happening now? - grey hydrogen produces 10tons of CO2 per ton of grey H2. - legal mandates in Europe require 42% of green hydrogen by 2030 and it takes time to build and deliver projects. So those that are exposed need to secure supplies and refineries use a lot of grey hydrogen. Refiners have some of the largest exposure from a failure to comply. It takes courage to lead and we applaud this material market announcement !

An important milestone in enabling energy transition with green hydrogen from Air Products 😎

While the implementation of green hydrogen infrastructure gets momentum in Europe, e.g. the implementation of the European Hydrogen Backbone, the private sector seems still to be reluctant investing in green hydrogen production. The reasons are complex and manifold. The attached article summarises some of the issues for private investors that have been collected during numerous discussions on recent conferences.

When was the last time, you tried something new? How about something no one has done before? Energinet is looking to build the first hydrogen infrastructure project in Denmark. The project – a proposed hydrogen pipeline stretching roughly 500 km through Jutland to Germany – marks a crucial next step in the green transition. Now, Energinet has chosen COWI as adviser on this ambitious project. COWI will deliver a FEED-study (front-end engineering and design) that among other things will look into optimising the pipeline route, refining the overall system design, and ensuring financial clarity for Energinet to make the final decision to go forward with the project – in which case COWI will stay on, advising on the detailed design of the pipeline. Dubbed 'the Danish hydrogen backbone,' this infrastructure is not just a national project but a crucial piece of the emerging European Hydrogen Backbone. By 2030, this network is expected to stretch 31,000 km across the continent, hopefully making green hydrogen a ubiquitous commodity for the European industry. European Commission approves up to €6.9 billion of State aid by seven Member States for the third Important Project of Common European Interest in the hydrogen value chain Multi-billion-euro H2 approval covers deployment of 3.2GW of electrolysers and thousands of kilometres of hydrogen pipelines. Seven EU member states are set to shell out billions of euros to deploy hydrogen infrastructure in the bloc, after the European Commission gives the so-called “Hy2Infra” programme the green light to proceed. The  “IPCEI Hy2Infra” project was jointly prepared and notified by seven Member States: France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, and Slovakia. https://lnkd.in/e3x2J6Vh

I'm pleased to highlight a significant paper co-authored by Derck Koolen and other distinguished industry experts on the transition towards low-carbon manufacturing in the European iron and steel industry. This research is vital for achieving the EU's 2050 climate goals and emphasizes the role of hydrogen electrification in steel production. The study presents scenarios assessing the impact of decarbonizing the iron and steel industry on CO2 emissions, energy generation mix, and economic factors by 2030. Key findings include a potential 25% reduction in direct CO2 emissions and an increase in demand for electricity and hydrogen, emphasizing the need for renewable energy expansion. This work is crucial for the future of sustainable industrial practices and energy innovation. TEAL Mobility has become the eighth member of the H2Accelerate collaboration as it looks to ensure the deployment of hydrogen refuelling infrastructure throughout Europe. The Air Liquide and TotalEnergies joint venture (JV) aims to deploy more than 100 refuelling stations for heavy-duty vehicles on major European corridors over the next 10 years. It has already implemented plans to operate around 20 facilities in France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany by the end of this year. The development of hydrogen refuelling infrastructure aligns with the H2Accelerate’s “ambitions to accelerate the uptake of green hydrogen for trucking in Europe, by bringing together hydrogen vehicle manufacturers and infrastructure providers.” François Bordes Olivier Bontems https://lnkd.in/ejMyjcNS
