Direct lithium extraction: reshaping brine mining possibilities. Direct lithium extraction (DLE) refers to a set of technologies that can selectively extract #lithium from #brines, addressing many limitations of conventional brine mining while providing additional environmental, social, and governance (ESG) benefits. #DLE allows for faster lithium production—within hours to days—at higher yields (typically between 80-95%), eliminating the need for evaporation ponds. https://lnkd.in/eceN7ydi

Vanadium is the new battery cathode chemistry, says Pure Lithium Corporation CEO. “You don’t hear a lot about vanadium –– it’s going to be the new cathode chemistry. It’s pretty perfect for lithium metal. And you can fit two lithium per one vanadium in it, and it won’t release oxygen. The stuff is so stable at temperature, it’s better than LFP. It’s better than anything,” Emilie Bodoin said. “We have a very smooth, even elementally pure piece of lithium. So you’ve just taken a ton of cost and processing and travel out of the biggest problem with the battery.” https://lnkd.in/drXeEWzz #vanadium $AVL MINING.com

Sofi Filtration delivers advanced fine particle filtration for #mining operations. Employing its extensive experience and expertise in fine particle separation, Sofi Filtration aims at boosting recovery and water efficiency at existing concentrators. With the mining industry looking to ramp up #production in response to the increased demand for metals driven by the #energy transition and geopolitical tensions, the development of new mines must be accompanied by further efficiency improvements in recovery at existing concentrators. Up to 40% of valuables are lost in mining and mineral processing, and a mere 5% improvement in existing concentrators would have a major impact: 1.1 million tonnes of #copper or 165,000 tonnes of #nickel per annum. Whereas the development of new mines is time-consuming and carries major risks over fluctuating metal prices, efficiency investments are possible today. Where do we source the lithium, cobalt, and other metal ores necessary for the production of wind turbines and solar panels? As the demand for these minerals increases, some are turning to deep-sea mining. The seafloor spans millions of square kilometers and is rich in metal ores. However, deep-sea mining is not without its risks: it can create sediments that may harm marine life, generate sound pollution that could disturb whales, and result in waste discharge from mining vessels. The sea is the world’s largest carbon sink, and mining projects that could harm the microscopic creatures essential for carbon processing pose a serious risk. Below is a thought-provoking article from the World Resources Institute that explores the necessity of deep-sea mining. It discusses both long-term and short-term alternatives, as well as the ongoing discussions about regulating mining in international waters.

Zapping rocks with a high-voltage pulse – similar to a lightning strike – could be the answer to decarbonising the mining industry according to researchers from The University of Queensland. Researchers from UQ’s Sustainable Minerals Institute have developed High Voltage Pulse (HVP) technology, which uses a short-pulsed discharge similar to a lightning strike, to selectively break mineralised ores while keeping barren rocks intact. This research is funded through the Resources Technology and Critical Minerals Trailblazer program, which also has the support of several mining industry partners, including Newmont Australia and JKTech Pty Ltd. https://lnkd.in/gaqR3sAZ #mining #decarbonisation #criticalminerals Christian Antonio Kym Runge Rick Valenta Caroline Stott Isaac J Coonan
