Our Regional MDS Service provides full MDS Oversight & Support to our clients MDS Team. Anything MDS related, they have it covered. But there is 1 thing they don't do.... MDS Completion. MDS Completion is a popular, separate service we do offer. But our Regional MDS Team doesn't do it. Why not? 2 reasons, both of them focused on what's best for our clients: 1. Allocation of Resources. Our Regional MDS's are highly skilled clinicians focused on getting your MDS department to perform at the highest possible level of excellence. That requires a tremendous focus on processes, auditing, education, and hands on work with the in house team. Doing MDS Completion is a distraction and time drain which will impede our regional from focusing on their core responsibilities, and getting the results for our clients. 2. Burn Out. I have spoken to way too many Regional MDS's who are burned out from becoming glorified MDS Floaters. They hop from building to building, filling in sick leaves, vacations and open MDS positions while still trying to juggle the Regional MD job they were hired to do. Many of them are drained, and want out. We protect our people so that they are happy and fulfilled in their position, and can accomplish the role they were hired to do. This came across my feed again today and I realized I was in a different mindset because I was struck by a different idea (practicing #ValueDiscovery skills). The #Hospitality industry knows well the value of "knowing the customer" in a way they could delight them with simple person-centered things. The fact that everyone is slightly different and it's "the little things" that matter. Think about the last time you checked into a hotel and compare that to the last time you had great hospitality (perhaps a resort, cruise, or vacation destination). No fancy pictures for this post, just a story. We had an administrator during a demo of Life Highlights tell us a story from just a few weeks ago. She talked about how a certain CNA was really good at learning about the resident's lives that she cared for. So much so that the CNA was considered a 'gold standard' when it came to senior care. We commented on how great it is to have employees who have the ability and skill to do this. The administrator then went on to say, "It's all good, except when the CNA leaves her shift, then all that knowledge goes with her." "This," as she pointed to the framed Life Highlights sitting in front of her, "would help that knowledge cross shifts and help all the staff care for our residents." Controversial, but OPD allowance doesn’t make much of a difference if you’re only using it during emergencies. Because if you only use it during emergencies, how is an OPD cover different from an IPD cover? 😕 Waiting for symptoms to visit a doctor and getting tests when your medical condition worsens shouldn’t be the point of an OPD cover. In my heart, I knew it was the only way to ethically practice medicine. But I was too scared of the business world. I was too saddled in debt I just didn’t know how to get started. Then came the moral injury and the burnout. Then came my termination from my employed position due to the failure of my Healthcare system. If I planned to stay in medicine, then I had to leap. I am now a year into my direct primary care practice, and I have never been happier with my career. My future is still uncertain, but I begin every day with joy for what’s possible rather than the despair of what was inevitable when I was employed.
