I don’t directly post often, but when I do, I try to make it meaningful. As we wrap up Plastic Free July, I’d like to strongly suggest to anyone wondering how they can make a positive impact on the planet to read the most recent book by Edward Humes, Total Garbage: How We Can Fix Our Waste and Heal Our World.   It is eye opening and tells a story about how we should look at waste as the root-cause problem of a lot of our global issues, from plastic pollution to climate change.  He opens our eyes to waste-mindfulness (i.e. being less trashy), a personal journey I’ve been on for a long time.  The first book of his that I read, Eco Barons: The New Heroes of Environmental Activism, was instrumental in my thinking with how I founded my own organization to achieve breakthrough conservation outcomes.  Howell Conservation Fund works on root cause issues, similar to what Total Garbage talks about.  I can’t wait to see where insights from Total Garbage take us next!   Total Garbage is so inspirational to me that I will buy a digital copy of the book for the first 10 people that reach out to me about this post! #TotalGarbageBook #SustainableLiving #ZeroWaste #WasteReduction #PulitzerPrize #TrashTalk #CommunityImpact #InspiringReads #PlasticFreeJuly

Today marks World Environment Day, an annual awareness campaign that is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by people across the world. This day celebrates environmental action and emphasises the power of governments, businesses, and individuals to create a more sustainable world. This year's slogan for the campaign is: "Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration." The campaign recognises that we cannot reverse time and stop the harm that has already occurred. However, we can make an effort to rejuvenate the soil and replenish water sources. World Environment Day is a vital reminder of our shared responsibility to safeguard the Earth and promote sustainability, and so, across our region, our people came together to organise local litter picks. In total, 12 litter picks took place over the last month, with an amazing 115 volunteers all sparing their time to make a difference and help our planet thrive. Our people collected and responsibly disposed of over 640 kg of rubbish, with over 130kg of this being plastic waste. 👏 Well done to everyone involved; together, we have made a positive impact on our planet! #Altrad #People #WorldEnvironmentDay #Sustainability #ProtectOurPlanet

Our neighborhoods are drowning in beverage container litter, storm drains are clogged, our waterways are polluted...and our landfill is projected to reach capacity by 2040. ♻️ Curbside recycling just isn't cutting it, and tons of recyclable materials end up in landfills each year. The solution? Recycling refund systems, or "bottle bills", are proven to work. Ten states, including nearby Massachusetts and Connecticut, are leading the way. Did you know it is against the law in North Carolina to put a #plasticbottle in a landfill?? Yep, it has been against the law since 2005! 😮 However, we still have over 55,000 pieces of litter entering the Haw River watershed with the majority of non-styrofoam litter being bottles and cans. While preventing litter at its source is no small challenge, bottle deposit laws have proven to have an immediate and lasting effect on cleaning up plastic from the environment.
