UC San Diego Design Lab & WDC 2024: The Research At WDC 2024 we’ve been engaging our community, civic and industry partners to understand how they might like to leverage the designation. An outcome of this research was the WDC 2024 Public Submission portal. It provided individuals and organizations an opportunity to submit their initiatives with the possibility of marketing and network support from WDC 2024 & partners. More recently in partnership with The City of San Diego we launched the Community-Driven Design Grants Program, a grant opportunity to support local organizations and businesses in delivering community-driven design activities that engage diverse communities across the city. The program offers multiple funding categories for activities, such as programs, projects, events, and festivals open to the public that align with World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024 focus areas. None of these programs would have been possible without each part of the Human centered design process, including UX research, early prototyping, testing and iteration. At UC San Diego Design Lab and WDC 2024 we develop problem statements that are based on primary and secondary research - user interviews, observations, workshops, charrettes and more. The intent is always to frame the problem/challenge by understanding the audience's unmet needs and wants – sometimes things that the audience might have never considered. The seven “why’s” help dive deeper into the challenge and often reveal underlying insights that can be used to develop initial hypotheses to prototype and test. #HCDworks #communitydriven #wdc2024 World Design Organization

One week ago, iF DESIGN was in Austin TX for SXSW, speaking to a past-capacity crowd of 150+ with nearly double that left waiting outside. Our topic was the 'FUTURE OF DESIGN: Megatrends that Matter'. In the 45-minute panel, which I was honored to moderate, we teased out some of the six themes from iF's 3rd annual Trend Report to be published in May. Here are some of my favorite takeaways: 1) The "newest thing" is not always going to live up to the hype; 2) The interplay between man & machine is only growing, but "creativity remains purely human"; 3) User experience (UX) is really a cross-disciplinary & cross-channel design opportunity since it's "pretty much everything"; 4) Participatory or co-design is about actively involving ALL stakeholders, including those not in the room; 5) Consciously incorporating sustainability into physical design choices is now mandatory; and 6) "The goal of design is to make us feel better in the future than today; it is the result of a desire for an ever-better world” (per Patrizio Cionfoli, iFDA Juror). HATCH Conference: From the idea to the Premium Design Conference Our journey with the Hatch Conference began around 4 years ago - thanks to a simple LinkedIn post with the question from Damian Martone ‘Does Berlin really need a conference like this?’. This question led to a close exchange with Jo Rychlik and that's how we at OBJ.Studio got to know and appreciate Damian, who had the vision to create a new kind of conference that is not designed for growth, but for quality. A UX design conference by design experts, for design experts. This idea excited us and we quickly agreed that we wanted to support this project. So we kept developing new spatial design ideas for the event that would characterise the conference. Lukas Treibenreif from OBJ.Studio was particularly committed to this and I then brought the topic of lasers into play. Damian gave us here completely free hand with the design.  More than 3 years later, we can say: Damian's plan worked out. The Hatch Conference last week has established itself as one of the most important UX design conferences in Europe - a meeting place for the brightest minds in the industry to exchange ideas at eye level. And as Prof Erik Spiekermann said at the conference: Making things is fun. Making things together is the key to making things better. Damian, thank you for the inspiring collab. Let's bring friction into design! As designers, we try to make everyday life more accessible and comfortable for people by removing obstacles and making products, services, and experiences easier to use, lighter, and more ideal in each iteration. We have gone way too far in making life frictionless wherever we can. This creates a monotone global culture, pushing local cultures aside, and heavily impacts underrepresented communities and nature. I suggest incorporating friction into our designs to make people's lives more meaningful and exciting and make them feel alive. We have to understand better when good is good enough. Let's design what helps people reflect, express, regenerate, and be purposeful.
