So excited to announce “Winter DJ Tape ‘24” is now up on YouTube. I wanted to share a bit about the project and my vision behind it. For the last few years I’ve been experimenting with different ways to DJ & perform without using a traditional turntable or CDJ setup.. I wanted to find a creative way to display my musicality on stage while performing without feeling limited by four decks and stereo audio tracks. I started to develop a Ableton Live template that would emulate what a DJ software can do and so much more. My first version of this template was finalized in 2021, I performed my first DJ set entirely running through Ableton. There were many takeaways from that gig, I learned a lot! I started to dive deeper into controllerism and further understand the history of electronic performance. In my sets I use a combination of grid controllers, samplers, drum machines, loopers and triggers to perform / DJ sets in real-time. I have configured many setup variations with different types of controllers, in the attached video I am using the Ableton Push 2 and Maschine +. They are both running in Ableton Live, and using session view I have arranged and open format {4 Deck} layout so I can mix in and out songs, as well as layer over the tracks in real time. Similar to djaying on decks, a lot of preparation goes into building the rig / layout prior to getting on stage so that you can have fun while on stage. I create performable patches, drum racks, effect chains and loops. This way of performing is non-linear, meaning once I cue in a section it will indefinitely loop until the next section is triggered. This gives me the freedom to improvise and create new variations of my existing music live.. thank you Donna Drake for letting us use your space to shoot. shoutout to my brother Spencer Hazen for bringing this vision to life, your talent and expertise are unmatched.
