Some positive news for the NHIndustries NH90 at last it seems: Marignane, 13 June 2024 - NH Industries (NHI) and the NATO Helicopter Management Agency (NAHEMA) have signed a contract to kick off the NH90 Block 1 upgrade (Software Release 3). NAHEMA represented Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy. This upgrade is a big step in the NH90 evolution roadmap, enhancing the TTH and NFH variants. 🚁 “The signature of the SWR3 contract, which marks the launch of the NH90 Block 1 upgrade, is an important milestone for the NH90 programme and is a clear sign that our NATO customers trust the NH90 and plan on operating it for many more decades to come,” said Axel Aloccio, President of NHI and Head of NH90 Programme at Airbus Helicopters. “We have a clear plan to extend the life span of the NH90 up to 50 years and we will need to upgrade the aircraft to make sure it stays relevant on the battlefield of tomorrow. The Block 1 programme will cover the next ten to fifteen years. Beyond that horizon, we are also planning the Block 2 upgrade that will define the future evolutions of the platform and ensure that it continues to meet the needs of the battlefield of tomorrow," he added. The first phase of this €600 million programme upgrades the NH90 communication suite and integrates Data Link 22 for beyond line-of-sight interoperability without satellites. IFF Mod 5 Level 2 for aircraft identification and tracking will also be included. Other upgrades are a new electro-optical system, dipping sonar, the MK 54 torpedo, and the Marte ER anti-ship missile. The NH90 Block 1 will also feature a civil-grade GNSS and flight management system. The second phase will apply these upgrades to about 200 NH90s, both NFH and TTH. NHIndustries, the largest rotorcraft joint venture, is responsible for the NH90 helicopter's design, manufacturing, and support. The SESAR 3 project MITRANO provides a solution, which develops and validates the operational and technical feasibility of the DMA of type 3 (Advanced Flexible Use of Airspace - AFUA - concept element) in response to a priority requirement of the military airspace user expressed in the strategic research and innovation agenda for achieving the digital European sky. The solution aims mainly to facilitate the integration of military specific requirements into the future ATM environment through dynamic and flexible options, which support optimization of airspace usage and contributes to enhancing the ATM network performance. Although focusing on military requirements, the applicability of the solution could be easily enlarged to future operations of the new ATM entrants, such as Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS)/drone operations, space launches, or High-levels Operations (HLO) that will require enhanced tactical flexibility.

"Outside the space domain, development and procurement programmes for airborne platforms have been and remain among the most complex, most challenging and most expensive of #defence undertakings. Hitherto, these have been almost exclusively centred on traditionally crewed platforms, though that is changing dramatically as sixth-generation development programmes accelerate and begin to gel around operational concepts and technology insertion. What has not changed, however, is the scale of the challenges facing developers - and operators - in trying to define,, understand and meet the operational requirements of tomorrow’s aerial battlespace. Also unchanged is the debate as to how comprehensive do solutions need to be, and the even more complex debate regarding collaborative development as a potential panacea for challenges ranging from technological capability to budgetary restrictions.
