Temporary works 1850s style. The image here shows the most critical time in the life of any bridge. The construction stage. This is the most complex and dangerous stage in a bridges life span. Ordinarily the construction stage does not last 33years! But the bridge has lasted 160years so far… (I’ll leave others to work out the embodied carbon calculations. ) It shows how #temporaryworks and construction engineering were at the heart of good #civilengineering right from the very beginning of civil engineering here in the Uk. After all the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) was founded in 1818! It took about one hundred years to establish the The Institution of Structural Engineers in 1908. That helped bring a focus on concrete and structures in a more nuanced analytical way than general civil engineering. Fast forward another hundred years and in 2010 the Temporary Works Forum (TWf) was incorporated and this advanced things again to bring a focus on all things to do with temporary works. 🛣 Sharing Knowledge in airfield Civil Engineering 🛫 Dear colleagues and fellow professionals in civil engineering, I am thrilled to share with you a presentation I recently delivered as part of our course on the design of airfield pavement, under the guidance of our esteemed professor, Abdelilah BANNOUR. Titled "Designing Flexible Structure airfield pavement ," we delved into several crucial aspects, including: 🔹 Designing by the empirical and rational method. 🔹 Exploring the new ACR PCR method, which has recently replaced the old ACN PCN method. 🔹 Practical case studies on the pavement design of Tantan Airport. This presentation provided an exciting opportunity to delve into the challenges and innovations of aeronautical civil engineering, with a particular focus on the safety and sustainability of airport infrastructures. I am grateful for the collaboration of my colleagues, Mohamed Darboun, IMANE HANINE, Hajar LABOURI, and Douaa NASSIRI, whose insights and contributions enriched our discussions and deepened our understanding of the subject matter. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our Professor Abdelilah BANNOUR for his guidance and expertise throughout this course, which has been instrumental in shaping our understanding of airfield pavement design. So there you have it ... had anyone been looking -- was there any "traditional" instrumentation on the site - tilt-meters, inclinometers, piezos ? If so where is that data ... if not .. WHY NOT !. How many bridges are now being assessed with InSAR and or traditional Instrumentation? If so, where is the public-facing data? Be it bridges or Landslides -- from a recent issue in the USA where the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) released a national Landslide map highlighting significant areas across the nation susceptible to geohazard activity .... Once the data is in the #public_domain in an ingestable and digestible form ... who is responsible for the actions and results that can be related to a structure or GTA labeled as an "at-risk" asset? Without the national capability to offer open-access data from a fleet of appropriate remote sensing instruments -- is it premature to note and champion these releases? Further at-risk Bridge Maps and a National #Landslide_Risk map and platform? #RRM #Corridor_safety #EOFAIL #Earth_Monitoring

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗽𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟭𝟱, 𝟭𝟵𝟲𝟳, was caused by a microfracture in an "eye-bar" and the lack of structural redundancy. Since that day, fundamental innovations have emerged: • Mandatory inspections to ensure safety. • Redundant design to ensure that a single failure does not compromise the entire structure. • Advanced materials and real-time monitoring technologies. Today, we remember how crucial it is to invest in maintenance and innovation to ensure the safety of our infrastructure.
