#ToddBoehly, the co-owner of Chelsea, has shared several insights and lessons learned regarding the club's new stadium plans since acquiring the club in May 2022. Here are some key points from his discussions: 1. Stamford Bridge's Importance: Boehly has emphasized the significance of Stamford Bridge in Chelsea's future, noting its unique and central location in London. 2. Stadium Development: The development of the new stadium plan is underway, with a focus on enhancing the matchday experience for Chelsea's local fanbase. 3. Patient Approach: One of the biggest lessons Boehly mentioned is the need for patience. Building something significant takes time, and he acknowledges that good things don't come together quickly¹. 4. Community Engagement: Upgrading the quality and size of the stadium is a priority, but it requires extensive conversations with various constituencies due to its location in the heart of London¹. 5. Long-Term Vision: Boehly revealed a decade-long plan for the club with Stamford Bridge at its core, indicating a long-term commitment to the club's infrastructure and competitive success¹. These points reflect Boehly's strategic approach to developing Chelsea's infrastructure while learning from the challenges faced during his ownership so far.

A question of sport: How many times a decade do you think this beautiful looking multi-billion dollar CBD football stadium would need 50,000 seats? (Lions Tour 2029, Rugby World Cup 2039?, Lions Tour 2041, FIFA World Cup 2046?). Surely this vision will get shot down by the new PM and finance minister, given that they have promised that - unlike the previous gov’t - they will not “waste” taxpayers money on things that Aucklanders dont really need/want? Bill Foley will most likely want to his football team regularly selling out a 25,000 seater stadium before he will invest in anything bigger. Why not sell Mt Smart to this Billionaire or, if he wants a venue in the CBD, the land at Wynyard Point? When will Aucklanders get to see the cost-benefit analysis attached to the 4 options that have been presented to our council? How much cheaper would it be to build an All Blacks themed hotel, bar and restaurant on Eden Park’s outer field in time for the Lions Tour 2029? The revenue made from that developnent could be used to pay back the money the trust owes the council and fund the upgrades and upkeep of that iconic venue. Maybe, if this did get approved, Eden Park could be downsized and become the National Cricket Stadium?

Wentworth Club - WEST vs EAST WEST Ranking: 48th GB&I, 20th England Architect: Harry Colt, Ernie Els "Design by Harry Colt in 1926, it earned the nickname ‘Burma Road’ due to its difficulty following WW2. Frank Pennink called it ‘the longest, most unrelenting test in the British Isles ... Wentworth Club’s West Course is routed as one continuous loop clockwise from the clubhouse. Famously, the course closes with back-to-back Par 5’s – the second of which has caused the most amount of consternation. It’s prestigious and notoriously expensive from the conservative British standpoint…’" - Evalu18Golf EAST Ranking: 45th England Architect: Harry Colt "The Wentworth Club’s East Course is a Harry Colt-designed heathland and the oldest of the three on offer. It opened for play in 1924, two years before The West. It is perhaps the most enjoyable for the average player. For some informed reviewers, the East is equal to the West. Whereas The West is more parkland than heathland, the East Course could be said to be more heathland than parkland. As opposed to The West, The East is routed in a continuous loop anti-clockwise from the clubhouse. A single Par 5 is found on the 9th. Twelve Par 4’s are found on the card, five of which play over 400 yards. Despite being just over 6000 yards in length, Wentworth Club’s East Course is still a challenge, if not a fair fight, compared to The West – for the mortal man." - Evalu18Golf Tell us your thoughts on these two fantastic courses? Which one would you rather play? 📷 Kevin Murray (All images shown are of WEST) #BMWPGAChampionship

A couple of days ago, SportAccord sent on pictures and a thanks to the panel I was chuffed to moderate. A very busy week has passed since I got back to NZ, but the panel conversation is worth a mention. We landed here, or thereabouts: the needs and wants of international federations, city and national destinations, and the public are constantly changing – and not uniformly. Factors such as geography, economy, environment, and life cycle make those needs and wants different for everyone. It’s in the sweet spot of overlap of those needs and wants where the most successful (in the broadest sense) events lie. And it follows, with all those variables, that a rule book for delivery passed from host to host is unlikely to land there by chance. Partnership, collaboration, open discussion and flexibility. That’s what leads to the best outcomes for everyone. Thanks to James Bulley, Katie Sadleir, Esther Britten, Perttu Pesä, as well as David Eades, Holly Norton, SportAccord, Joel Lavery and the team at Birmingham for making it happen.
