Our July Top Docs issue is on newsstands and online now! On the Cover, Pavna K. Brahma, MD, a reproductive endocrinologist and IVF director at @shadygrovefertility, with baby Lucy. "It was a true honor to have been a part of the journey that led to her arrival," she says of Lucy. "The IVF journey is as much an emotional journey as it is a physical one. After being by a patient’s side through IVF treatment, it is very humbling to call them with their positive pregnancy test. I feel lucky to have a profession that feels more like a mission than a job." Click below to see the full list and learn more about Atlanta's Top Docs. 📸 @benrollins.co https://lnkd.in/e_JuM3r

How Inadequate Training On Specific Women’s Health Issues And Poor Communication Lead To Medical Mistakes: Medical mistakes happen across all patient categories and in every medical specialization. However, a few factors have combined to make women’s healthcare – including but not limited to reproductive issues and maternity care – an especially common site for problems related to provider-patient communication. Gaps in medical knowledge arising out of the ways clinical trial participants have historically been selected have resulted in a “standard” understanding of human anatomy and physiology that often leaves out of account potentially important endocrinological and immunological differences between male and female bodies. We said what we said. But please note this is a GENERAL statement. We're not saying YOUR child's pediatrician (in particular) is wrong. And we're not saying ALL pediatricians are wrong... BUT... We shouldn't put EVERY pediatrician on a pedestal JUST because they're a doctor. Because guess what? Doctors, like any person in any profession, can be wrong or make mistakes in their practice. Doctors are no exception. There are many reasons how and why a doctor can be wrong: Reliance on Outdated Guidelines: Medical practices and recommendations evolve over time. Some pediatricians may rely on outdated practices or studies that are no longer supported by current research. Limited Time in Appointments: Time constraints can lead to rushed assessments, leaving some concerns unaddressed or overlooked. Personal Biases: Like all professionals, pediatricians may have personal preferences or biases that influence their recommendations, even when more than one valid option exists. Bias Toward Medication: The medical field often emphasizes pharmaceuticals and interventions over more natural or holistic approaches. A pediatrician may be quick to recommend medications when lifestyle and dietary changes, time, or other non-invasive solutions might be more appropriate for the child's condition. Dismissal of Parental Concerns: Pediatricians may sometimes undervalue parental instincts, which are crucial for identifying issues early. And so much more... We don't want to scare you or bash doctors (we value and respect the many brilliant pediatricians out there), but we do want you to be informed and not blindly follow a doctor just because they're a doctor. It's very important for parents to feel empowered to ask questions, seek second opinions, or even disagree with their pediatrician if something doesn’t feel right. Trust your instincts as a parent and ensure that the care your child receives aligns with both medical knowledge and your child’s specific needs.

I've read hundreds of cases of failed delivery, and I've found three areas lawyers should focus on to build a strong case: 1. Comprehensive Care: It's crucial to provide comprehensive care for pregnant individuals, especially those with conditions like gestational diabetes. This involves close collaboration among specialists such as obstetricians, endocrinologists, dieticians, and diabetes educators. A holistic healthcare approach ensures optimal management of complex medical conditions during pregnancy. 2. Critical Decision-Making: Effective decision-making is paramount in managing labor complications. Clear, evidence-based protocols and guidelines are essential for healthcare providers to make informed decisions, particularly regarding interventions like insulin treatment for gestational diabetes. Timely interventions are critical, and any delays or omissions can have serious consequences. 3. Learning from Errors: Has the practitioner done a review and apologised or admitted that something went wrong? An apology doesn't mean the case is won, but thorough reviews and analyses of adverse events can identify where things went wrong. Overall, these insights can guide future approaches to analysing and managing mismanaged labor, emphasising the need for comprehensive care, critical decision-making, and a culture of learning and improvement in healthcare settings.
