Entering the 2024 season, Head Coach Gonzalo Pineda said the team was emphasizing defense, and that showed up in the club’s efforts during the offseason. The scouting department, led by Carlos Bocanegra and Jonathan Spector targeted players with a strong pedigree. Seven matches into the regular season, the strategy seems to be working. Atlanta United is playing better defensively this season, conceding fewer goals in MLS and limiting quality shots for the opponent, which can be seen in this week’s metric called expected goals per shot against. As Atlanta United, and MLS, develops deeper knowledge and use of data analytics, we’ll be taking a look behind the curtain at some of the specific stats the club values. In our new weekly content series, we examine one metric provided by StatsBomb that may not stand out on a first watch, but upon closer evaluation, is a useful tool to measure the team’s performance.

Could the Baltimore Sun and other news sites carrying sports please add real statistics (ANOVA, t-tests, p-values or non-parametric tests when appropriate) and statistical graphs to their web articles? 51.7 might be statistically significantly different from 4.34, but no way to know without more information. https://lnkd.in/e-zsBS-6 The average MLB team is scoring 4.34 runs per game — down from 4.62 last season — but the Orioles lead the majors at 5.17 per contest.
Orioles reset: Offense is down across MLB. But not in homer-crazed Baltimore.

When you think of insights, #SamAllardyce probably doesn't come to mind. Allardyce spent the last of his playing days at Tampa Bay Rowdies in the now-defunct North American Soccer League. His experience there meant when he became a second tier football manager. one of the main things he did was he encouraged the club to sign up to ProZone (football stats for his team). However, he knew that 'having access to the numbers wasn't enough, he needed to mine the information for insight'. He hired analysts to do exactly that. Here is what he found: ⚽ If his team kept 16 clean sheets over a season, his team wouldn't be relegated ⚽ If his team scored first they would have a 70% chance of winning the game ⚽ A third of all goals come from set pieces ⚽ Most foals from corners came from balls swung into the goalkeeper ⚽ He knew on average the ball would be turned over 400 times in a game. This highlighted the importance of switching to a defensive mindset as soon as the ball is won. That was the tactics, but it even came useful when choosing players. Jay-Jay #Okocha, Youri #Djorkaeff and the late Gary Speed, all seen as ageing players but selected for his Bolton side due to data. The insights suggested the likes of Gary #Speed was still running as much as Premier League stars Steven #Gerrard and Frank #Lampard. Speed was signed and was pivotal for 4 years. Bolton finished in the top 8 regularly and finished as high as 6th in the league, qualifying for Europe: "I don't think he gets enough credit for this, he was ahead of his time. He used all kinds of stats, such as physical stats, psychological stats." (Nicky Hunt) His Bolton team was a well-equipped with a data driven team competing with the big teams of the Premier League .Turning data into insights can give teams the edge hence the heavy investment in data in sports teams and business teams. Finally The Negro Leagues statistics to be officially integrated into MLB historical record. Telling the story of baseball without the Negro Leagues would paint an incomplete and narrow picture of America’s pastime. Baseball’s history is finally getting a revision. Negro Leagues statistics will officially become part of Major League historical record on Wednesday. The move comes more than three years after Major League Baseball announced it would be elevating the Negro Leagues to major-league status. The more than 2,300 players who played in the seven iterations of the Negro Leagues from 1920-1948 will be integrated into MLB's database. The Special Baseball Records Committee of 1969 voted to include the American League, National League, American Association, Union Association, Federal League and Players' League but did not give the Negro Leagues major-league status.

Is the SuperBowl the Groundhog Day of investing? The old football wives tale is that if a team from the old National League wins, the S&P 500 will rise, and if the American League team wins, it will fall. And it claims an almost 80% success rate. You won't catch me making decisions based on athletic prognostication. I favor a data-driven approach to everything I do, including investing. Give me data every day of the week, and twice on SuperBowl Sunday. #investing #moneymatters #superbowl (tag Nevin Adams) https://lnkd.in/gBKxZZCS

Sports analytics post: On #BadgerBracketology I break down the new #NFL dynamic kickoff by crunching the numbers. The bottom line: the kickoff return rate has increased, but not by much. And the NFL does not report statistics relevant to the new rules, making it hard to evaluate them. Read more below: https://lnkd.in/ggA7NDFb #sportsanalytics

All marketers say they make data driven decisions. Let's put that to the test with a fun experiment. What conclusions would you draw from these MLB stats: Not including the 2020 shortened season, 2024 is the first season in a decade to not feature a team with 100 wins. Are teams getting more competitive? Is there more parity? Prior to 2018, 2002 was the only year in MLB history, at least going back to 1904, that featured 4 teams with 100 or more losses. 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023 all saw 4 teams with 100 or more losses. 2024 barely escaped with the Angels notching 99 losses. Are teams getting worse? Are the rich getting richer, so to speak? Is the MLB, like most sports, all about 8-10 teams that consistently seem to do well? #baseball #data #musings

I often use sports data to look at and work out ideas. Some of my favorite data is baseball to use not so much because I love baseball, but because it is such a long and rich data set. I highly recommend the baseballr package in R ( I just recommended it to a friend yesterday). Recently I was thinking about rule changes in baseball and its impact on yearly overall stats. I was surprised to see that stolen bases in for the last two seasons was over 3,500 each year (2023, 2024). Interesting because the year before (2022) was more than 1,000 less. In fact the last two years are more stolen bases in a year than any other year in history and in most cases by a lot. That to me is a major shift in how the game is played or the process is optimized. https://lnkd.in/eaT2pJNz
