We've just wrapped up another invigorating week at Connect, where our teams shared ideas, architected solutions, debated concepts, and demonstrated how we plan to bring AI-powered agents to healthcare. Our goal is to supercharge labor productivity in the industry and improve patient access.
Despite incredible advances in Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI agentic workflows, this is far from a solved problem. Our extensive research and discussions have revealed how easy it is to confuse what's possible today with what can truly drive great outcomes for health systems and patients.
It's particularly important to distinguish between "agentic workflows" and "automated workflows." The former are purely LLM-driven, self-planning, self-critiquing agents that can react to changing environments and take action (via tools or APIs) without step-by-step instructions. The latter are explicitly defined functional steps where one or many steps can be powered by AI.
When should you choose one over the other? It depends on multiple factors:
1. What is the scope of the input data? Is it broad (ranging from legal contracts to DEXA scans) or narrow (such as audio from a visit recording)?
2. What are the requirements for reliability and observability? Do you need a 98% success rate, or is 60% sufficient with human-in-the-loop ready to take over? Do users need to report on a well-defined funnel, or do they only care about final outcomes?
3. What is the mode of interaction? Is the user interacting dynamically with a conversational agent, or is this for backend automation of large quantities of data?
These are the challenging questions we tackle daily with our Product, Solutions, and Delivery teams to find the right balance. Given the rapid pace of LLM and AI tooling improvements, I have little doubt that AI agents will soon automate more workflows than we can imagine, even in the most optimistic scenarios. Thus, we're investing heavily in data/ML platforms, custom models, and agentic techniques (we're having such a blast with Langchain, Flowise, and Laminar!).
At the same time, recognizing our significant responsibility to maintain the highest quality of care for patients, we're also doubling down on how we define and orchestrate workflows. This ensures operational excellence and helps us continue building the highest level of trust with our partners.
As we watch the 2024 Summer Olympics inspire millions, I'm reminded of the powerful energy at Notable's recent Connect event. This gathering brought together our expanding team from across the country, reinforcing our shared commitment to transforming healthcare productivity and outcomes.
During Connect, we heard from key partners like Erica DeBoer from Sanford Health, who emphasized why they choose to work with Notable—not just for our innovative technology, but for the dedicated team and culture that drive our mission. This sentiment was echoed throughout the event by partners who highlighted how our customer success best practices and collaborative innovation are driving meaningful change across the nation. Thank you Krista Hoglund, Barbara Joers, Matt Hocks, Paul Fu, MD MBA FACHE, Kristen Guillaume and Crystal Broj!
A particularly exciting moment at Connect was the introduction of our AI-driven "agents." While details remain under wraps, we're eager to reveal more to our partners soon. These agents are designed to revolutionize healthcare workflows, ensuring every interaction is seamless, safe, and efficient.
Reflecting on our journey at Notable, we're reminded of the trust and maturity we've built with our partners and the healthcare community. Yet, there's a palpable sense of excitement, as if we're just scratching the surface of what's possible. Our culture might not be for everyone, but for those who align with our mission, it creates an unstoppable force ready to tackle any challenge. I want to thank our incredible team for their commitment to doing the best work of our lives together. Our continued innovation and unwavering commitment to improving healthcare signal that, while we've accomplished much, our most impactful work is still ahead of us. We can’t wait to share what’s next.
