When I tell people that I'm looking for a role as Technical Writer, they ask me if in the AI era, this role is still in demand. In my opinion, as a technical writer, I write for a user, from a user's perspective. I can be perceptive of what a user is trying to accomplish, anticipate the things they'll try and offer tips and tricks, proactively. I can also add descriptive screenshots and step-by-step gifs to my docs. Can AI do this? Perhaps with advanced, custom prompts it can. But is AI perfect enough to work independently and take over my job? No. Not yet. I think AI is great as it adds value to the content a writer can produce. I see AI as a friend, not a threat. Depends on *who* is doing the "defining* -- many employers (and recruiters) don't seem to know the difference between a "tech writer" and a "tech editor" or a "UX documentation engineer" or a "wordsmith" or a "scrivener". The employers and recruiters make the distinctions more regarding their perceived "value" of what they want to pay and what they *think* a documentation person can do for them. Then they assign the title to fit that rate (usually whichever is lowest in "rank" and pay). Similarly, those of us who are technical documentation specialists tend to sway in either direction of "tech writer" or "tech editor" (and even "tech illustrator" -- because, really, that IS a separate skill that not all folks have) depending on what we like to do and what we're very good at doing.

Dear writer, listen up. I get it, AI makes your job easier - but what's the point of a shiny, jargon-y, and almost perfect piece of content - if it doesn't reflect your writing style? If it fails to stand apart? If the copy lacks a heart and soul? I couldn't have articulated it better than Kushal Saini Kakkar - hence the repost.
Dear candidate, Really wonder why you thought it was okay to send a primarily AI-generated assignment for a writer role. And I think that this is something that needs to be addressed. Can't just be me receiving some of these. If you're signing up to be a writer, you really need to do it because you enjoy writing and do not want to outsource it to AI. Sure, there's a lot that you can use AI for, and you should. But writing is just not one of those things if you're a full-time writer. You should be in content or writing roles because you enjoy writing. Because it lets you express who you are, or who your company is. Because you feel happiest when you write or make something new. Also, the trained eye can spot AI content from a mile away. It's mostly too perfect and shiny. It has jargon. And it doesn't read human. We inherently like things with texture and imperfections because they stick with us. Why would you want to smoothen all of that away? :) And on that note, we're looking for a senior content writer who's good with a hybrid work mode. Pls see if this is you or someone you know. I hear that AI might do technical writing, leaving us jobless. Yesterday, I was trying to close a documentation defect. The closure involved little writing but a lot of understanding, demos, and interactions with multiple stakeholders. It wasn't smooth, you know how it goes. I understood the issue after interacting with stakeholders with varied levels of knowledge. And, though writing constituted maybe 20% or 30% of the effort, it must be precise and correct. How can an AI navigate through a scenario like this? And I quoted just one of the millions of scenarios we technical writers face. #ai #technicalwriter #technicalwriting

Why is it so hard to implement AI into tech writing workflows? A technical writer's day looks less like crafting beautiful prose and more like wrangling code updates, battling doc bugs, and deciphering engineer-speak. Sure, writing's important (maybe 20% of the time), but the rest? AI isn't quite there yet for the complex stuff. AI can be a power tool - but you gotta know how to use it!
