Our family domestic violence calls continue to rise and many families are struggling to navigate the legal and mental health system. Our call rates have increased over 200% in comparison to our first quarter, in 2023. Why is our work at Project Be Free so important? We extend into delicate work beyond intimate partner violence. Our goal is to provide a safe space for a family’s foundation to be repaired while working against years of generational family history of violence. Our work looks very different day to day: - Advocating for treatment (mental health and substance abuse) that is contributing to violence - Assisting youth in creating healthy boundaries in relationships they have never witnessed within their own families - Delicately supporting a family in weapons removal due to youth gang involvement - Naming what abuse is for the first time to a family and educating members on how trauma cycles are leading to current violent instances This work is not only necessary, but needed to prevent homelessness, trauma and abuse, school shootings, youth gang involvement, mental health decompensation and increase of substance abuse. As supporters of Project Be Free, we ask that you contact your cities, city council, nonprofit funders and advocate for the importance of this work to continue. We need to start to see more funding opportunities that encompass whole family systems to create change, one household at a time. 💜 #advocacy #family #support #dv #community #holistic #services #coresponse #nonprofit

It’s Loneliness Awareness Week. This week is about raising awareness and sparking conversations about loneliness. The Marmalade Trust has set the theme this year as Random Acts of Connection. For those experiencing homelessness it is not uncommon for breakdowns in support networks and social stigmas to be factors leading to their homelessness, as well as factors making it all the more difficult for individuals to move forward in their lives. Random acts of connection can make a huge difference in people's lives. This week, take some time to reflect on the impact of loneliness on those experiencing homelessness and think about ways you can make a positive change. #LonelinessAwarenessWeek #RandomActsOfConnection #SpreadKindness

I have witnessed first hand the profound positive transformative impacts physically, emotionally and for mental health a Shelter First approach has on the homeless even after just a few nights. We need local, state, territory and federal governments to look at the empty, under-utilised assets all around us that can be mobilised quickly to assist our people at this time which is a humanitarian crisis. People are dying, people are hurting, people are struggling - enough is enough. You have a voice, we need immediate action, we are stronger together. I will launch a LinkedIn advocacy group in the coming weeks, where I hope you will join me. Shelter first - no one left outside. #advocacy #weallhaveavoice #shelterfirst #nooneleftoutsode #homeless #humanitariandisaster

It is paramount that nonprofit organizations and schools serving east-side KC understand the condition that many of their families are in. I know they get tired of parent's lack of engagement or inconsistency. I know they get frustrated when parents fail to communicate or follow through on expectations. But we must understand our community has suffered extensive trauma. Many families are in a state of survival, with their days defined by constant and recurring crises. They are exploding unintentional trauma responses on the regular, and in some manner simply trapped in a fight, flight, freeze or fawn state of being. Their capacity to add any extra thing to their plate is simply not available. Even if it would benefit themselves of their children, they can't see outside of the overwhelm of the moment right in front of them. Many providers say that "the parents are the problem," but maybe the problem is our service providers lack of understanding: 1. The culture of poverty and how it encases and influences families 2. The extent of how trauma has impacted and wired their systems of being 3. How to appropriately create safety, secure belonging and support families through authentic relationships to rewire their systems of survival Maybe if we didn't write off parents as "stuck in their ways" and helped them see the origin of "their ways," these parents would be able to create new ways for themselves and their children to thrive. #communitydevelopment #mentalhealthawareness #eastsidekc
