Ensuring that your new workers are kept safe takes time, energy, training, and resources. Many companies treat all workers the same and offer the same onboarding regardless of level of experience and at the end of the day.. this is why folks are getting hurt. New workers require more training, more instruction, and more mentoring in order to thrive safely in their jobs. Having a management team that understands that and is able to provide not only initial onboarding training, but also the additional job specific training and mentorship that the worker needs, is KEY. Additional training and monitoring can include: - mentor shadowing; watching a more experienced or licensed team member and learning from them first hand - specific training like WHMIS, respirator training / fit testing, CSTS, LSE, or school related to their job - Internal protocol and procedure review; interactive review of specific safety documents related to that workers job; i.e. forklift manual, lift inspection procedure, positional JHA, etc. - Competency assessments at regular intervals until adequate, and including safety in the performance review process Don't wait until an incident happens, actively prevent incidents from happening. You either spend the time training and mentoring to prevent incidents and injuries, or you spend the time investigating incidents and managing modified work programs. The choice is yours. And I'll tell you something...the training is always less time consuming and less expensive than the incident management - always.
Young people are our future. Introducing them to the workforce with tips on how to keep safe is one of the most important things we do at WSPS. From September 2023 to June of this year, we launched some innovative programs, aimed at getting safety messages across to these at-risk workers, and their parents. Learn about them and what people are saying, in this infographic! #youngworkers #workplacesafety #InternationalYouthDay #YouthDay #IYD2024

My first article in the team and on a topic I am exceedingly enthusiastic about: all things B Corp and employee ownership (EO)! Have a read if you’re interested in how the values of B Corp and Employee Owned businesses complement each other. You may not know but Stephens Scown are both EO and a B Corp. An unusual combination for a law firm but #itmatters to us as employees of the firm that we do things differently. Happy EO day to those who are already employee owned and celebrating this month 🎉🥳 #bcorp #employeeownership #stephensscown #protectingvalues #peopleplanetprofit

Let's talk about Privilege... 'A special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group.' The key word here is granted as opposed to earned. To have privilege, is to hold certain advantages based upon a characteristic or status. Throughout our lives, while our characteristics can remain unchanged, our status can evolve. I'm an example of that and my work now helps me use my 'new earned privilege' to help others find bespoke solutions to combat the obstacles created by concepts that stand in the way of EDI. In the workplace, privilege can exist in many forms: salary, promotional opportunities and the day-to-day treatment of colleagues, amongst other things. While privilege cannot be avoided, it is often an underlying root of workplace inequalities. We all hold a responsibility to reduce the effects of privilege within our workplace if we wish EDI to flourish. But, how do we better understand, measure and combat the 'unearned power of privilege' to foster equitable and inclusive workplaces? At Diversity+, in collaboration with the The Law Society of Scotland we created the 'calculator of privilege', an interactive tool to help us understand and measure privilege with the aim to then challenge and find solutions to combat it. The tool has been created specifically with the wider Scottish legal sector in mind but it can be adapted for other industries, individual organisations and teams. If you'd like to learn more, book a demonstration and discuss how it can be used for your workplace EDI journey, please reach out to us: ➡ hello@diversityplus.info ➡ https://lnkd.in/dwJiC7em ➡ or DM me on this platform #diversityandinclusion #privilege #legalprofession #womeninlaw #privilege #change #leadership
