"Complaints about the number and sufficiency of staff are the third most complained about issue in residential care." The ongoing care workforce crisis has been highlighted once again in the Quarter 3 (January - March 2024) Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission Sector Performance Report by the Australian Government Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission. While the report shares the good news that 91% of residential care services met the responsibility to have at least one Registered Nurse (RN) on-site and on duty 24/7, it also highlighted that "recruitment, training and support is an area of concern in the individual requirements of both residential care and home services." It is with great concern that we share the news of a fire breaking out at a nursing home in Crooksling, Ireland, which was intended to be converted into accommodation for asylum seekers. This unfortunate incident not only poses a threat to the safety and well-being of the individuals involved, but also highlights the pressing need for proper and secure housing for asylum seekers in our communities. As recruiters, it is our responsibility to advocate for the rights and safety of all individuals, regardless of their background or circumstances. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that asylum seekers face when seeking refuge in a new country. The lack of suitable and secure accommodation not only puts their safety at risk, but also hinders their ability to integrate into their new communities. As recruitment professionals, we must continue to push for better support systems and resources for asylum seekers, ensuring that they are provided with the necessary infrastructure to rebuild their lives in a safe and welcoming environment. Our thoughts are with the individuals affected by this unfortunate event, and we hope that the necessary measures are taken to address the immediate needs of the asylum seekers impacted by this fire.
