New Zealand’s water, wastewater and stormwater networks and services have been desperate for attention for many years, with aging pipes and treatment plants, a massive and growing infrastructure deficit, and varied delivery across the country. With ‘Local Water Done Well’, the Government’s new water services reforms, comes time for Aotearoa to move from conversation to clear action. In Newsroom NZ today, Lorraine Kendrick and Garry Macdonald break down the detail, and share the key things councils need to consider, to deliver the safe, reliable and affordable water services our communities need. Given that water scarcity is an issue, flow measurement of treated water supplied to the network is very critical. The treated water discharged from the main water treatment plant must always match with the quantities of water taken in from the adjacent river. Did you know we lose 2.1 trillion gallons of water each year in the US from public water systems? That's 6 billion gallons lost every day. Water leaks are a chronic problem in older water systems. Each year in the US we lose a tremendous amount of treated potable water from our public water systems. In addition to the lost water resources, this is also lost monetary resources for the cost of treatment as well as the lost revenue for the system, and an additional load on our stormwater systems.
