Here is an overview of Earth observation investments in 2023. The total investments in EO over the past year was $1.9 billion, with the Data and Application segments making up almost 95 % of the overall funding raised. 3 Key Takeaways: 1. The overall funding for the Data segment has predictably decreased (vs 2022), but there is a significant increase in the number and funding for downstream application firms that use EO data. Time for satellite EO firms to validate their business cases and improve EO adoption. 2. The intermediary segments - Platform and Analytics - continue to be overlooked for private funding (not public funding) probably due to two reasons: i) some are really low-margin data marketplaces and ii) some are custom, project-based consultancies disguised as platform businesses. 3. The Insights segment includes companies with EO-based solutions trying to find scale & product-market fit in a specific vertical while the Application segment with companies using EO to solve specific market problems is seeing record investments esp. in areas of defence & climate.
