📣 Some big TERN news on a project we've been building over the last 12 months 💡 We have become increasingly convinced that venture capital can play a key catalytic role in creating a new generation of high-growth refugee-led companies. Companies that can drive change both within their communities and the wider narrative around refugee inclusion. However, significant structural barriers exist between the refugee business community and the venture capital community. As a result, we are seeing almost no equity capital reach refugee founders. 🚀 This fund looks to fundamentally change this reality. We are planning to back entrepreneurs with growth support and capital from day 1 through to pre-seed. We will become the friends and family that refugee entrepreneurs need to build scalable companies. And in the process prove something that should already be obvious. Refugee entrepreneurs are, and always have been, highly investable. 👋 We are now looking to bring on a Fund manager who shares this vision. You will help us bring this fund to market and execute its thesis. Building in Chaos These are trying times for founders all across the globe, from Yaba to Silicon Valley. Rising interest rates, reduced funding flowing into venture capital, the boom and bust of some sort of tech investing bubble, and so on. While we were trying to come to terms with these happenings, it became all chaotic in Yaba. Founders all over Africa right now are building in chaos. Unstable government policies, devaluation, inflation, japa, and several others. This is real chaos. But you know what else happens during chaos? Wealth transfer! As we look beyond the present times into the opportunities this decade presents us. These opportunities require founders to be more prepared than ever before. The times we're in require war-time founders. Founders who will build an edifice with the resources for a bungalow.

The cheat code for building a startup in a place like Tanzania is hiring problem solvers who are low ego and have a high level of professionalism. They get the job done without making a big deal and have internal self motivation to take their job and themselves seriously. This is true for anywhere but it's really hard to find these people in a place like Tanzania because corporate culture encourages siloed thinking, cookie cutter approaches and limited agency on the part of the employee. Large corporates understandably focus on quarterly profits and as a result employees are encouraged to go through the motions and keep the ship moving in the same direction. Startups need quick thinkers to navigate new situations often times never seen before in these markets. Creative thinking requiring a high level of personal agency, something not developed in standard corporate culture. I always tell my team: if you fit this I will make sure you get rewarded. PAY MONEY, DON'T TRADE FAVORS. Most startup founders will need technical talent at some point. Outside of your co-founder(s) you should aim to pay talent that you work with even if it's pro-rated. Trading favours or (IOUs) only work in specific situations/setups. Hiring creative technical talent (in Ghana) may not be one of those situations. Insightful and Thanks I have been on this project which was expected to be completed in two months tops. This client was proposing a long term deal but no cash upfront. We agreed to work on the project for the sake of our passion for developing products and sentiments from the client about constraints with respect to finance. Not knowing, there was more to do on the project than there was and the proposed budget after completion wasn't correlating with the overall work to be done on the project per the signed contract. There was no honesty on what was required to be built. Lessons learnt: 1. Devs and Creatives don't rush into a contract or project because it looks glittery at the end. 2. Take time to go over and investigate what is actually expected from you to do. 3. Always take part payment upfront before you dive into contracts. I have learnt this the Hard Way.

Nigerian startups raised $398.2 million in 2023, a 66% decline compared to the previous year. Shomvob Jobs, a B2B job tech and HR tech startup based in Bangladesh, has raised US$1Mn in Pre-Seed funding from Cocoon Capital, a Singapore-based venture capital firm. Additionally, it received a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to increase employment opportunities for low-income women in Bangladesh. Founded in 2022 by Rifad Hossain, Naqib Faiyaz, and Hasibur Rahman, Shomvob focuses on improving employment processes for blue and silver-collar workers.
