I am continually surprised by how our lives are managed regarding end-of-life and death care. How do we create equitable places to live and die when colonialism and a one-size-fits-all approach persist on the land known colonially as the Sunshine Coast? Our network of cemeteries, managed by the Sunshine Coast Council, features entrance signs with 'Est.' (established) dates that reinforce the settler narrative without Acknowledgment of the Land or its First Peoples. For a long time, I thought the cemeteries were for settler ancestors, past and future. Too often, we exclude people by failing to understand their lived experiences. What does lived experience mean in Western end-of-life and death care? In colonially governed societies, end-of-life and death care are controlled by government policies, land management, and practices that impact both the living and the deceased. Lived experience refers to first-hand knowledge of these systems, particularly for those still affected by ongoing colonialism. This includes members of the Stolen Generations, survivors of forced adoptions, and cultural and faith groups facing barriers to practising their beliefs due to restrictive policies and systemic inequities. These experiences, compounded by intergenerational trauma, grief, and loss, highlight deeply entrenched imbalances in how life and death are managed. Intersectionality, arising from a combination of injustices, worldviews, and identities, adds complexity to this issue. Policies and inequities can include limited access to culturally appropriate funeral rites, discrimination in the allocation and orientation of burial plots and memorialisation, inadequate access to facilities (such as toilets and change rooms for mourners, visitors, and external workers), and a lack of representation in decision-making processes. These issues emphasise the deep-rooted imbalances in managing life and death. On Thursday, we commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Sunshine Coast Council Cemetery Plan 2019–2028. Walking-with place in a cemetery is an art creation process that helps us understand why Acknowledgment is important to Indigenous Peoples and how we can make it meaningful. By knowing and sharing our stories, we participate in truth-telling. I loved this article for long-distance grandparents. This is another side of globally mobile families - those left behind. Seeing the increase in support for them, helping each side of the long-distance family relationships better understand each other, is wonderful. "If you lived near your grandchildren, you’d likely be spending time and money creating memories with them. From a distance, you can’t enjoy trips to the park or weekend family dinners. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t carve out time during your week to connect with them though!...Whether you are a distance grandparent or not, your experience as a grandparent depends on how much effort you put into the relationships with your adult children and grandchildren. If you want a close, lasting relationship with your grandchild, you need to commit to making the effort. We know our cemeteries are sacred 🙏 Changes in legislation in light of serious injuries caused by falling headstones across the UK means councils now have to undertake strict health and safety checks in cemeteries. In 2015 an eight-year-old child tragically died when a headstone fell onto them in a Glasgow cemetery – we cannot allow that to happen here in our city. We know graves and headstones are sacred and so we undertake any safety inspections with the utmost sensitivity, with families contacted whenever a headstone is deemed to pose a danger. Memorials are only laid flat if they are over 2ft tall, are of significant weight and are deemed to be at immediate risk of collapse. In those circumstances we use rope and pullies to lower them carefully. If any headstones need to be repaired, attempts will be made to support them with wooden stakes and bands to keep them stable, rather than laying them flat. There was understandably anger when some headstones were laid down last year and as we get set to undertake further inspections we want families to ensure we have the correct details associated with a headstone. We will always endeavour to contact next of kin but we have found through these inspections details are often not up-to-date.
