Nurses at Atrium Health Navicent go beyond what’s asked of them, even when they may not be working in a patient-care setting. Seth NeSmith, a registered nurse in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at Atrium Health Navicent The Medical Center exemplified that recently. As a result, we are thrilled to recognize him as Atrium Health Navicent’s latest DAISY Award winner! While on the way to work recently, Seth noticed that a vehicle had swerved into a deep ditch. Seth pulled the victim out of the water, assisting them with two other individuals prior to the arrival of Atrium Health Navicent EMS to provide further care. Seth then quickly returned home to get cleaned up and reported to his scheduled shift. Thank you, Seth, for going above and beyond for patients at all times!

BD’s survey hits home. So many patients could benefit from fewer needlesticks, and we strongly share their ‘One-Stick Hospital Stay’ vision. Patients and nurses are asking for change, but awareness is still missing. At Idris Oncology, we apply this vision by ensuring our #WireTrap can be inserted through existing IVs. We want to offer samples with more cancer biomarkers without additional needlesticks or drawing blood. How can we spread the word about innovations that truly put patient experience first? #OneStickHospitalStay #patientexperience #cancer #innovation

Does this patient survey shock you? I sure hope so. The majority of our patients require multiple attempts to place an IV or have their blood drawn. What other invasive procedure fails so frequently on the first attempt? Why is this torture allowed to continue? My thoughts on why: 1) Patients don't know that we as health care professionals can and should be doing better. They don't know that the person attempting their lab draw/placing their IV hasn't been fully trained and shown to be competent in doing so. And why don't patients know better...? 2) Because most staff don't know that we can and should be doing better. They don't know that best practice means using vein visualization or ultrasound and that "no blind sticks" is a standard practice. So why don't our staff know better...? 3) Because most leaders don't know that their facilities are behind the times. It is 2024, and ultrasound and vein visualization have been a standard for years. So why aren't these technologies implemented in all facilities? If your leaders don't know, your staff certainly won't know and will therefore not be supported to use these technologies to improve first-stick success. Please share this information with your leaders, but better yet - share it with your patients and patient families, or your own loved ones, because at the end of the day, WE are all patients and family members of patients. We need to speak up to put an end to this torture. #oneanddone #stopthetorture

If you have not been following our efforts, the last four months our new firm, CareLuminate, has been researching patient care by interviewing over 1,000 nurses. The results have been startling. There are some hospitals we have researched that I would NEVER let my family members go to. The problem is that we have only researched about 50 hospitals. We are just getting going. And then last week a family member of mine needed to go to the hospital (he is doing well now) and the question came up, which hospital should he go to? The city he lives in has two hospitals. Realizing we can't wait until we have investigated every US hospital, we need a tool that can give us insights right away, so we built a new search that approximates the nurse recommendation score based on other known quality measures (www.careluminate.com). An approximation is not perfect, but take a look at the hospitals near you and the patient/feedback about those hospitals. If you are in the Kansas City, Portland, Stockton, Saginaw or Raleigh-Durham areas, we do have data on your local hospitals and how they compare. You can see our results as we collect them. Be educated about which hospital you go to. Don't take a gamble with your care.

Home Health & Hospice Advocate I Managing Director I Helping providers reduce the costly impact of vacancies and staff turnover through innovative and permanent staffing solutions
The state Senate passed a bill allowing licensed practical nurses (LPNs) in hospice settings to make death pronouncements. This bill, introduced by Sen. Lynda Schlegel Culver (R-27), expands the current law in Pennsylvania. RNs, medical doctors, physician assistants, and coroners were previously the only authorized professionals for such pronouncements.
