For nearly 17 years, Teri Mehall has supported countless families through their cancer journeys as a pediatric oncology nurse at Atrium Health Levine Children's. But in November 2022, Teri began her own personal battle with stage 3a melanoma. While she was nervous to transition from her role as nurse to patient, Teri found comfort knowing she was in the best possible care at Atrium Health Levine Cancer. “So many people have helped me along my journey, and I can only hope I am doing that for others,” said Teri. “Knowing this disease continues to affect so many people is a constant reminder for me that we have so much work to do.” On Saturday, June 22, Teri will run in the #KeepPounding5K to help raise money for clinical research and cancer care programs at Atrium Health. She has participated for many years in support of her patients. Now she also runs to honor every member of her care team that has played an important role in her healing. Did you know? only 4% of federal funding goes to pediatric cancer research. 🌟 Last night, Armas had the privilege of attending the Liv Like A Unicorn gala, an event that truly highlighted the urgent need to support families facing pediatric cancer. No child should ever have to endure the pain of illness; they are meant to be free-spirited and carefree. Liv Like A Unicorn stands as a beacon of hope, continuing the legacy of their beautiful Liv by providing essential support to families in similar situations. Through their Unicorn Boxes, they bring moments of joy to children in the hospital, and their financial assistance eases the burden for families during these challenging times. Every donation goes directly to families battling pediatric cancer, ensuring that they receive the help they desperately need. Did you know that the risk for breast cancer dramatically increases for women between their 30's and 40's? For women in their 30's, there is a 1 in 304 chance of developing breast cancer in their 40's; in their next 10 years. This chance drops (worsens) significantly to 1 in 50 for those women in their 40's as they move into their 50's over their next 10 years. Today (23 May) is the official Pink Ribbon Breakfast day where there are events held all around New Zealand providing the opportunity to get together and raise vital funds for breast cancer education, research and patient support. The mental impact of a breast cancer diagnosis is extremely hard to quantify and this challenge isn't just for the person diagnosed. It can be for their those close to them. While dealing with the mental side of this diagnosis is something I may not be able to assist with directly, I can help to provide solutions to assist with the financial impact. This could be through a lump sum trauma payment following diagnosis, a monthly amount from income protection to supplement your income while you are off work or even treatments through private medical insurance. My ask of you today? 1. Donate to this great event and cause if you can spare a few dollars - https://lnkd.in/gps2yrhM 2. Make sure that you and those around you have sort advice from me on how you can protect the negative financial impact this could have if you or loved ones received a diagnosis like this. #PinkRibbonBreakfastNZ #resure #insurance #kiwisaver #aboveandbeyondadvice

We're doing the Pink Ribbon Walk for the nine women diagnosed with breast cancer each day in New Zealand. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Kiwi women. 1 in 9 women will be diagnosed with it in their lifetime. And 650 women in Aotearoa die from the disease every year. That’s why we're taking part in the Pink Ribbon Walk this year, to help change that. Please donate to raise funds for life-saving education, life-changing patient support and ground-breaking medical research. And bring us closer to a day when there are zero deaths from breast cancer. #stgeorgescancercarecentre #pinkribbonwalk #breastcancer https://lnkd.in/ggruBgwM

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month 🎗️ This month, we shine a light on the courage and strength of young warriors battling cancer. At WINKS, we're committed to supporting not just brain tumor patients but also the families of children facing cancer. Did you know? Pediatric brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer-related death among children and adolescents ages 0-19 years. In 2023, an estimated 5,230 new cases of primary brain tumors in children and adolescents are diagnosed in the US. Despite advances in treatment, many survivors face long-term effects, highlighting the critical need for ongoing support and research. Our mission at WINKS is to provide compassionate support and essential resources through our Brain Tumor Power Packs and Encouraging Nods Support Group. We also offer our Empathy in Action grants to families to help with living expenses and other critical needs during treatment. Join us in raising awareness, sharing stories, and supporting research to find a cure. Your support helps fund grants that make a tangible difference in the lives of these brave children and their families. This is my sister in law Stacey. She is 34. She was a breast cancer survivor… and then got thrown the brain tumour card. As if that wasn’t cruel enough, she was then hit with the triple threat - terminal brain cancer. This has been a 3-year battle. She has fought it with my brother-in-law John and their daughter Lily by their side. They live in Sydney and are fortunate to have some family there. We are in Perth - the rest of their family are in Ireland. There have been GoFundMe pages set up over the years to help cover the cost of trial drugs and treatment. None of which have been a “cure” for this incomprehensible disease. This attempt at crowd funding is for a much more tangible reason. Stacey is no longer receiving active treatment. She is in palliative care. She is somewhat comfortable (thanks to morphine). But she knows, and those around her know, that this is now end of life. How long? “Days to weeks”. So my eldest daughter Trinity and I wanted to raise funds FAST. For one reason only - to buy TIME. To allow John to stop working now so he can spend these last moments with her. To provide him and Lily with the option to retreat from the world when they need to - and to give them some freedom in having a choice. You see, the Cancer has taken most of their life choices away from them. Like the big white wedding they had planned. The international travel. Even the local trips to Perth to see us were ruled out due to Stacey’s condition and the financial reality. So for one last time, if you know me or if you don’t, perhaps you can relate in some way. As a cancer victim; or survivor? As the carer or family member of someone fighting the disease. As the widow or child or someone lost to cancer. Or as the friend who has stepped in when times were tough - for a neighbour, a school family or a work colleague. It might be the cost of your weekly coffee indulgence. It might be the fuel bill when your car is running on empty. It could be the value of your groceries. Or maybe it’s just some of the disposable income you might be saving for a rainy day. It is a very rainy day - and any contribution will help this young family - my family - to buy some moments to create some memories - and find some peace. To those who have already donated, you are Angels.

When it comes to pediatric blood cancer, we can do better. And with only 5% of cancer drugs approved specifically for children, and 80% of kids treated for cancer experiencing chronic health challenges due to their treatment, we must do better. That’s why today, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is holding our first-ever Dare to Dream Day, when EVERY DONATION goes to The Dare to Dream Project—a $175 million initiative created to prioritize, expedite, and fundamentally transform pediatric blood cancer treatment and care.
