Ensuring your child's favorite supplies stay theirs or supporting a community supply box? The debate continues during this year's "back to school" season. 🏫✏️🖍️📐📏✂ Some families believe that pooling supplies into a community box is unfair, especially when they have spent more on higher-quality items, while others support the community approach for promoting equity and reducing the burden of shopping for school supplies individually. Here are nine insights from my and other teachers' experiences on how using a community supply box promotes equity by ensuring all students have the same resources and enhances efficiency by streamlining classroom management and reducing disruptions. Even with a community supply box, families can still support their child's unique preferences by purchasing personalized ● Supplies for home use or for specials projects ● Notebooks and folders that their children keep in their backpacks or in their desks ● Back packs and pencil cases ● Labels and decorations for items they use frequently, like notebooks or water bottles. It’s a myth homeschooling only works for people who “do not work”. I would argue whether they are committed to commerce or community, parents are always multi-tasking and purposefully occupied while caring for their children. Let’s think about the use of time differently and make homeschool accessible to everyone! Buy the book https://lnkd.in/g8ECDACg

RedDrop was founded by women for young tween girls. I was inspired to create RedDrop after my fifth-grade class of girls started their cycle with me in the classroom. I saw how overwhelmed they were about their new stage of life. I knew that I had to help them in my role as an educator and a mom. I snitched together a tiny purse for all my students that later became today’s Code Red Kit. Today, young tween girls need more support than ever. One step of listening to tween girls is developing the correct size period products for their bodies. Two other ways to help are educating them at home and in the classroom to help all students understand what’s happening to 50% of the population. I encourage all of you to look into how your local schools are educating your children and how you are educating your tweens at home about one of humanity’s most important biological functions. If you are looking for a way to educate your child at home, you can explore our education bundle here:

📢 Empowering Communities for School Choice! 🎓🏫 In a world where chance should never determine a child's education, it's time to take action! Many feel powerless, but we must rise up and fight for more school choice. When the narrative of school closures emerges, let's not fall for the hustle. The way they get us is telling us that something is being taken from us and because we've had so much taken from us we go straight into defensive mode. #EducationMatters #SchoolChoice #EmpoweringCommunities

I'm particularly pleased to see our latest thought leadership piece being published today- because it feels hugely personal. One day, my child said, "I can't go to school today." That was the start of 9 months of part-time timetables, meetings with school, contact from local authority attendance officers, juggling home-schooling and a full-time job, and so much more. It's been a rough ride, but I'm so fortunate that my child's school has gone above and beyond to support us - weekly emails from his teacher sharing all the strategies they're putting in place, a pastoral team of support, starting school in the nurture room, reduced timetable, extra sensory breaks, allowing him to wear his own clothes and bring a toy in from home, and a big box of tissues ready and words of support during a few very emotional meetings. I really couldn't ask for more. This week we're celebrating. My son managed to go on a week-long residential trip, something that was unthinkable only a month ago. We're not out of the woods yet. We're bound to encounter more setbacks. But finally, there's a little glimmer of light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. School non-attendance is a complex problem and there's no easy solution. I hope that this think piece will help give schools ways to see the child behind the attendance figures, and find ways to support them. Because every child deserves to feel safe and happy and have the right to learn. #EBSA #Attendance #Education
