The Personalized Career Planning and Guidance (PCPG) program is a critical VA benefit that provides career counseling, assessment, education, planning and guidance resources unique to your needs, and can help you set and achieve personal, career and education goals. It provides you with one-on-one support whenever you need it - putting you in the driver's seat of your education or career plan.

Suzette Kent, a member of the SkillStorm Advisory Board, recently co-authored an article for RealClearEducation with Ken Eisner, ETS Managing Director, Higher Education to Workforce. The article highlights the importance of skill development programs like #VETTEC for transitioning service members adjusting to civilian life. In their piece, Suzette and Ken note, “Several studies have shown that veterans are nearly 40% more likely than non-veterans to face underemployment—working in roles that don’t fully utilize their skills or qualifications.” The VET TEC program has already demonstrated its effectiveness over the past five years, with nearly half of its graduates securing meaningful employment with salaries of at least $65,000 annually. Complex, adaptive challenges, such as the one presented by the recruiting environment, requires new thinking, idea generation and novel solutions that existing knowledge and even decision-making repertoires are inadequate to assist. From an inclusion and diversity of talent perspective, VADM Rick Cheeseman and his team have created an adaptive solution that meets potential recruits where they’re at, commits an investment into them, and shows how both the recruit and the Navy can achieve their goals together. Where else can we look: medical, legal, age, specialties, individualized contracts, who knows! I am hopeful this is only the beginning of increased possibilities to keep America’s Navy the premiere, world class Navy that it is.

We’re excited to see the continued momentum behind the bi-partisan movement to #tearthepaperceiling in the public sector! Vice President Harris’ comments reflect the principles of the Federal Jobs for STARs Act and the bipartisan Opportunity to Compete Act. The federal government’s legislation, combined with the over 24 states who have already committed to taking steps to remove the unnecessary degree requirements for state jobs, are significant actions that can have transformational impact through implementation. They can pave the way to creating a more equitable labor market for the 50% of workers in the US who have developed valuable skills through military service, community college, training programs, partial college completion, or, most commonly, on-the-job experience. Let’s lead the way to create a future where all STARs (workers Skilled Through Alternative Routes rather than a college degree) can shine. In the last few weeks and months: ✅ Presidents, Vice-Presidents and Governors (past & present) across all parties announcing #skillsfirst plans & actions ✅ The Federal Jobs for STARs Act and the bipartisan Opportunity to Compete Act gaining momentum in Congress ✅ Workday’s and Indeed’s customer conferences featuring #tearthepaperceiling and spotlighting STARs-inclusive Generative AI innovations (plus Trevor Noah identifying himself as a STAR!) All reinforced by our Tear the Paper Ceiling campaign & coalition, our STARs Public Sector Hub, our research-backed insights and our STARSight data-driven technology. This is the type of impact any social entrepreneur dreams about for their organization. Thank you to our many partners and our incredible team at Opportunity@Work for the years of hard work to reach this tipping point. Much more to do to achieve #hireSTARs outcomes but “rewiring the labor market” is now a real possibility.
