From 13 to 16 May, we attended and sponsored Family & Relationship Services Australia National Conference held in Melbourne. The conference is one of Australia’s largest annual gatherings of practitioners, academics and policy makers working to support children, families and communities. The conference provided an important opportunity for senior department officials to engage with the sector on key initiatives to improve outcomes for children and families. The Attorney-General, Mark Dreyfus KC MP, delivered a virtual keynote address which highlighted changes to the Family Law Act 1975 (Cth) that commenced on 6 May 2024, and the review of the Family Relationship Services Program. Import Points in the Change: • The Family Law Act of 1975 will shortly undergo significant revisions. • The modifications will aid in streamlining a complicated and multifaceted family law system. • Since the rules are new and unproven, it is unclear how effective they will be in protecting children and victim-survivors of family violence until case law is established. • All professionals involved in the family law system must get specialized training on domestic and family violence, and an evidence-based community education campaign must support these improvements. The Courts are immensely proud to launch three new short educational films: 1. What is family violence in family law cases? 2. How is the voice of the child heard in family law cases? 3. How the Court process works for parenting cases. The Courts understand that family violence is a significant issue within our community – in 80% of family law matters filed, a party alleges they have experienced family violence. In addition, the amount of information required to navigate family law matters when there are children involved can be overwhelming. The Courts are committed to continuing our work to ensure the community has access to resources that support their journey in the family law system. These films are another step in ensuring that occurs. To view the films, see the Courts’ website https://lnkd.in/dzhQkSFB #fcfcoa #familylaw #familyviolence

Be great if the court make a useful video about how the court determines the veracity of a parties allegations of family violence in those 80% of cases and how long it takes it to do so and what happens in the meantime. That would be useful to a great many fathers waiting for their day in court and subjected to humiliating supervised contact in the interim. Wonder what percentage of those allegations are ever substantiated? That would be a useful statistic.
