A large ocean liner was headed across the Atlantic from Portsmouth to New York. As it neared its destination at night, a lookout on the wing of the bridge reported, ‘Light, bearing on the starboard bow.’ ‘Is it steady or moving astern?’ the captain called out. The lookout replied, Steady, captain,’ which meant that they were on a collision course. The captain then called to the signalman, ‘Signal that ship: We are on a collision course, advise you change course 20 degrees.’ Back came a signal, ‘Advisable for you to change course 20 degrees.’ The captain said, ‘Send, I’m a captain, change course 20 degrees.’ ‘I’m a seaman, second class,’ came the reply. ‘You had better change course 20 degrees.’ By that time the captain was furious. Effective immediately, mariners are instructed to submit their MMC applications, forms, and supporting documents directly to MMCApplications@uscg.mil. This move replaces the previous fragmented system of submissions to various Regional Exam Centers (RECs) which often led to inconsistencies and delays. Thank you Bradley Clare, the NMC REC team, Mayte Medina and Wayne Arguin Jr for continuing to take steps to ensure that mariners can enter the maritime industry, renew and quickly upgrade the licenses they need to keep the American economy going and preserving our National Security. #maritimeinnovation #workboat #maritime

Here's the AIS video feed of the cruise ship 'Costa Concordia' grounding off Giglio, Italy, in 2012 - and here's why it happened: 1. The Master, with the con, failed to monitor the rate of his turn and expected turn exit; 2. The Master/Officers repeatedly silenced anti-grounding alarms, which had been sounding for more than 1 minute before grounding; 3. At the exit of the turn, the Master failed to appreciate the 20-degree difference between his ships' head, and Course Over Ground (the vessel still maintained significant transverse port sway momentum); 4. The Master failed to account for the forward pivot-point of the vessel at the high speed of 15 knots, where the turn angle caused the aft end to swing to port and contact the submerged rocks. While the Master initially denied he noticed the grounding, the ship slowed from 15 to 4 knots in the minutes afterwards. Power and propulsion was lost. After an extremely close pass to shore, his should have been a very good indicator that the vessel had, in fact, grounded and the hull been breached. The Master, Francesco Schettino, was sentenced to 16 years in prison for manslaughter, causing the shipwreck, and for abandoning his passengers. #maritime #emergency #management
