“The reality is that as much as the need in our community has risen, our funding from traditional sources hasn’t, which makes it difficult to provide anything additional at Christmas, so this really does make a difference,” says Tara, General Manager - Food Security. Thanks to the generosity of travellers and Auckland Airport's Twelve Days of Christmas community giving tradition, the Mission has received $10,000 to help bring Christmas to those facing tough times. We’re incredibly grateful for this support—together, we’re making a real difference this festive season. CALLING all community non-profit and service organizations who want to be a part of the food insecurity solution by bringing a fun, interactive, community-building food drive event to your community. While we’re all still enjoying the dog days of summer, it’s the perfect time to think about ‘Fall Fundraising’. With higher food prices and increasing shortages affecting us all, Sharecrows.org offers a creative, grassroots solution to restock community food banks by turning scarecrows into Sharecrows. What’s a Sharecrow? A Sharecrow is a scarecrow display with a bin for collecting non-perishable food items to help restock local food banks. As communities across North America face varying degrees of food bank shortages, this is the perfect event to replenish food bank supplies. Sharecrows.org has introduced a straightforward Fall Food Drive event designed for non-profit/service organizations to host in their communities. They’ve done all the heavy event planning lifting and made it super easy for your organization to roll out. Sharecrows.org presents a triple-win opportunity for your organization to become a "Hunger Hero" and contribute to alleviating food insecurities. A win for food banks facing critical shortages. A win for the community to engage in a fun and interactive scarecrow food drive tour, fostering creativity, community building, and supporting a good cause. A win for your organization, as the funds raised can benefit local food banks and other community programs. Residents and storefront owners who register for participation commit to crafting a scarecrow, displaying it from October 20 to 31, placing a bin for non-perishable food items, and having their address on a Sharecrows Tour Map for residents to take tours, with a supply of ‘treats’ for the scarecrows along the way. As Halloween and Thanksgiving draw near, it's an ideal time for this interactive and innovative Food Drive event. Visit www.Sharecrows.org to learn more about the event and how to become part of the Sharecrows.org community. Be a Hunger Hero in your community; be a part of the solution. Secure your spot now. *All early bird members will be grandfathered into special introductory rates. Thank you, Nicole Machado, for the opportunity to be part of this incredible experience! It was my first time volunteering at a food drive, and the energy and dedication of everyone there truly moved me. Seeing the excitement of people coming together to donate to the local food bank really highlighted the impact we can make when we unite for a good cause. Here are a few reflections from this memorable experience and how we can carry these lessons into our daily lives and work: The Power of Teamwork: Watching everyone work side by side, each person adding their unique contribution, reminded me how much more we can achieve together than alone. It’s a great reminder that teamwork is at the heart of meaningful progress. Small Actions Make a Big Impact: Every item donated, no matter how small, contributed to the bigger picture. This is true at work as well—small, consistent actions add up. By focusing on small, impactful tasks daily, we can drive productivity and see real results over time. Resilience: Coordinating and carrying out a food drive takes dedication and persistence. When challenges arise, we need resilience to push through—whether we’re stocking shelves or tackling a big project at work. Never Giving Up: There were moments when it seemed overwhelming, but everyone kept going because they believed in the cause. In work and life, when we stay committed to our purpose, we can overcome obstacles that seemed impossible at first. Support for a Right Cause: When you’re working toward something that genuinely helps others, people naturally want to pitch in and be part of the movement. Having a clear, meaningful purpose invites others to support and uplift you, both in community efforts and professional goals. Thankful for the opportunity to contribute to something bigger than myself and for the chance to reflect on these values. Looking forward to putting them into practice every day!
This Halloween, we went Trick or Treating to restock our local Foodbank.🥫🎃 12 volunteers, knocked on over 100 doors to gather 85 kilograms of food donations in less than 3 hours! The problem 🚨 With the rising cost of living crisis, the demand for Foodbanks is also increasing. In the UK, an estimated 7.2 million adults and 2.7 million children experienced food insecurity in June 2024 (source: https://shorturl.at/VrG65). The solution 💡 My ghoul friends and I got together to tackle the problem of food insecurity in a lighthearted way - We pulled out our spooky best outfits and went Trick or Treating to collect food donations in Cathays, Cardiff’s student central and Canton, a residential neighbourhood. Both neighbourhoods were welcoming, generous and pleasantly surprised when we asked for food donations instead of treats. The Impact 🏆 We gather just over 85 kilograms of food that will provide 8 local people in crisis with 3 days of food supply. This is not a lot, but it's a start. I encourage you to share this story within your networks to inspire more people to take local action within their communities. The Learnings 📝 - We often overestimate what we can do as a society and underestimate what we can do as a small group of individuals. 🤝 - Owing to my recent project management qualification, I systematically planned, delivered & measured this campaign with a blueprint for scalability 📈 - The power of community - My favourite part of the campaign is knocking on doors, talking to strangers and getting them excited about donating. On one occasion, a resident followed us down the street to donate additional packets of Jaffa Cakes they found in the kitchen! 🙌 Thank you Sheeraz Gulsher, Lauren Kay-Lambert and People Like Us for recognising this campaign and inviting me to speak about it at one of your events last year. A massive thank you to workplaces like Innovate UK and Innovate UK Business Connect that encourage their employees to take on voluntary work to positively impact the community. Alan Cowie and Maria Campbell Fran McIntyre thanks for approving my voluntary leave, it didn’t go to waste. 🤗 None of this would have been possible without the help of our volunteers - Harshita Manti Siddhesh Desai Agnes Wamagui Jonathan Rhys Sullivan Stanzee Machado Rhys Pewtner, Jasper Pewtner, Harry Pewtner, Dan Katz 👏

🌟 Proud to see how initiatives like PORCH Chattanooga are growing and making a difference in our communities! 🌟 PORCH Chattanooga is part of the larger PORCH Communities movement, dedicated to reducing food insecurity through neighbors helping neighbors. Our model is simple: once a month neighbors leave the most needed non-perishable items on their front porches, and our volunteers pick up and deliver them to a local pantry. This incredible program is an example of how we can all play a role in supporting our neighbors and creating a more sustainable future. PORCH Chattanooga’s success shows the power of community involvement. By donating food, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, we can all contribute to making our towns better places to live. If you're inspired by PORCH Chattanooga, consider starting or joining a similar initiative in your own community. (https://lnkd.in/ehtgZTQS) Together, we can create a network of support and ensure that no one goes hungry. I used to be the most grinchiest grinch ever - what happened? 😂 As an immigrant, Christmas is tough. With my family 5,000 miles away, I would feel like a Mexican-American fish out of water with all the unfamiliar traditions and songs. I refused to be happy, because to me Christmas was a time of mourning, a reminder that while everyone else was celebrating with their families (even if begrudgingly), I couldn’t have what others took for granted. So what’s changed - how have I gone from grinch to being OTT in love with Christmas? I started giving, instead of looking at what I lack. It changed for me after volunteering with a Christian charity last year, St Vincent de Paul Society (England & Wales) I’ve never been a fan of the capitalistic side of Christmas, and I have too much clutter. I don’t need any more gifts, I need more meaning, not more stuff. So on Christmas eve last year, I spent all day with a group of other volunteers, from all faiths and none, as we collected surplus food from supermarkets (that would have otherwise gone to waste) and organised it into gift bags and parcels for hungry families. Sorting in a makeshift gazebo in someone’s front garden, while it was windy and cold and the volunteers shared snacks, hot drinks and stories - then seeing the gratitude on people’s faces when we delivered the food. It was wonderful. We did the same on New Year's eve. Another day of food collection, sorting and delivery to families in need. What can I say - I caught the bug. I’ve been volunteering with them all year, and these people have become like family to me. Christmas isn’t lonely. Because it’s not about me or what I get. It’s about what we give. If you’d like to contribute, we are fundraising for our local homeless day centre. They are at risk of having to seriously scale down their services, leaving 1,200 people out in the cold, due to the rising costs and drops in grant funding. If you could donate, even £5, it would mean the world. https://gofund.me/07d2412f And if you feel a hunger in your heart and want to find out more about volunteering in your local area, feel free to give me a shout and I can share more info. Much love, and happy happy Christmas, however you celebrate 🎄❤️

Why I volunteer when I can… This was me yesterday, about to begin volunteering for the day with Seaful charity and the amazing events they host; connecting people with waterways and educating young people about ocean protection. I’ve been supporting Seaful and a number of other charities, since becoming self-employed and here’s my reasons why… 1) To stay connected with and support causes which I believe in, and which align with my own personal values. 2) To escape the ‘busy-loneliness’ of being self-employed (if you know, you know) and connect with cool people who share my values too. 3) To maintain a sense of balance, and not become swamped with the need for revenue-based activity all the time. 4) Because volunteering is cool 😎 and yes, it’s OK to feel good about doing it too. Question… Do you #volunteer and if so, what do you enjoy most about it? Why not volunteer your comments below (see what I did there!)… #volunteer #charity #leadership #connection #people #values #beliefs #bethechange #businessowner #selfemployed #stayconnected #bluespace #oceanprotection #coaching

At DFR, community is the heart of everything we do. We strive to ensure our programs honor the dignity of every individual we serve. Instead of relying on a single hub to distribute recovered food, our decentralized No Cost Grocery Program (NCGP) model allows us to meet people where they are—in their own communities, where they feel safe and comfortable. We partner with 21 nonprofits, schools, health centers, and resident councils so that people can easily access food in familiar, trusted community spaces. Often, community members themselves help set up and distribute the food, meaning neighbors are receiving food from people they know and trust—not from outsiders who may not fully understand their unique needs and preferences. This model prioritizes agency, which is the first step toward achieving true food sovereignty. 💚 Help us sustain this work by donating to Denver Food Rescue this Colorado Gives Day at https://lnkd.in/grnBY_2F. #CommunityFirst #FoodRecovery #NutritionSecurity #NoCostGroceries #DenverFoodRescue #FoodJustice #FoodAccessForAll

One of the many avenues of outreach our amazing Who I Am Foundation volunteers provides is our year round care package distributions to those experiencing #homelessness. Our distributions have been our most consistent outreach project since 2013. Our amazing Volunteers organize and execute the distributions, alternating between a mobile distribution and a stationary distribution. Currently, we are blessed with the ability to assist an average of 1,000 people per month; in multiple cities, in multiple states! Our goal with distributions since 2013, has been to provide essential necessities to those in need. Necessities that we may take for granted, are viewed as a luxury to those without. Some of the items we hand out include food, bottled waters, hygiene items and toiletries, first aid supplies, socks, shoes, feminine hygiene, dog food, seasonal items, and lists of resources available in the area. We also utilize our time in the community, retrieving feedback of needs and issues, by those in need. Engaging with individuals, learning their stories, and providing them hope. Our distributions continually evolve. Addressing needs, while making available the proper resources. Tangible donations are the lifeblood of our distributions. Your contribution of any of the items below, help to ensure each and every distribution is effective and impactful. Learn how you can help us by donating, or volunteering, by contacting us at any time. www.WhoIAmFoundation.org #TeamWhoIAm
