The stats are in. Cancer Council Victoria's Victorian Cancer Registry data for 2023 paints an up-to-date picture on how Victorians are impacted by #cancer. The 2023 report focuses on early-onset cancers including breast and bowel cancer. At the VCCC Alliance, we're also concerned with the continuing disparities in cancer outcomes between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Victorians, and regional and metropolitan residents. Our work underway is aimed at reducing these gaps. This is what those inequities look like in the report: 〰️ Aboriginal Victorians are 64% more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than non-Aboriginal Victorians 〰️ Aboriginal Victorians are almost three times more likely to die from cancer than non-Aboriginal Victorians 〰️ Five-year survival among Aboriginal Victorians is 13% lower than among non-Aboriginal Victorians 〰️ The median age at death for Aboriginal people diagnosed with cancer in Victoria is 67 years compared to 76 years among non-Aboriginal Victorians - a nine-year difference! Regional Victoria 〰️ Regional Victorians are 10% more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than those living in cities 〰️Regional Victorians are 15% more likely to die from cancer than those living in cities 〰️ Five-year survival is higher in residents of major Victorian cities - 73% - compared to those in regional Victoria - 69% 〰️ Regional Victorians are 54% more likely to be diagnosed with #melanoma than those living in cities The full report can be accessed below. Every year, Cancer Council’s Victorian Cancer Registry is the first in the world to report the most up-to-date cancer stats from the year before. The numbers tell a complex story of cancer incidence and mortality rates that will help inform research, policy, and programs in the years to come. This year its focus on the steady rise in cancer incidence in younger Victorians aged 25-49 highlights how important it is for all Victorians, no matter their age, to see their doctor if anything doesn’t look, feel, or come out right. In my role as a federal health management consultant, I witness the collaboration between federal agencies delivering cancer care. But even more inspiring are the stories of patients, families, caregivers, and advocates whose lives have been impacted by government investment in cancer research across all stages. #cancer #innovation #research
FDA's Oncology Center of Excellence invites you to the next #ConversationsOnCancer on June 13, at the start of National Black Family Cancer Awareness Week. This year's theme, “Engaging the Generations,” is a powerful call to action against cancer. OCE's Project Community began this initiative in 2021, during the 50th anniversary of the National Cancer Act and the signing of Presidential Executive Order 13985, focusing on equity and inclusion in cancer research. The initiative seeks to mobilize community-based stakeholders to build knowledge surrounding cancer clinical trial participation and minority population specimen donations to national genomic databases for cancer research. Join us in this critical conversation and help us spread the word. Together, we can make a difference in the fight against cancer.
