Exciting news! Huge congratulations to the Audible Sight dev team. We're thrilled to announce the release of the most advanced and elegant DIY audio description tool available anywhere. This game-changing update to our technology is the ultimate solution for making video content accessible for visually impaired individuals, akin to what closed captioning does for the deaf community. Our new release is a magnum opus. As the pioneers of DIY audio description technology, we know the bar has now been raised to new heights! Whether you're a returning user or new to Audible Sight, now is the perfect time to experience our stunning new features: https://lnkd.in/e-Q_m4Gf Try it for free. Create up to 10 minutes of audio-described video at no charge. No credit card, video editing skills, or technical expertise required. There are two forms of audio description. Extended audio description adds brief splices of video where the audio description gets inserted. The resulting audio described video is slightly longer. This type of audio description is perfect for most information, government, and education videos. Here's an example, created using Audible Sight: https://lnkd.in/e_r8SmeW Standard audio description makes use of the silent gaps in the audio where there is no dialogue in the original video, keeping the video length unchanged. This type of audio description is perfect for movies and TV shows. You can see it on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video and other streaming services. Look for the audio description option where you choose the play settings such as closed captioning. Here's an example, created using Audible Sight: https://lnkd.in/eEfnGben Our new release lets you choose between Extended, Standard, or a hybrid of both. You can easily drag and drop the audio descriptions where needed. Or let our AI-enabled engine automatically place the descriptions exactly where they belong. If the description says, "a black dog is running in a field", our technology automatically places that description precisely where there's a black dog running in a field. It prevents overtalking of any dialogue in the original video. You can use a simple text editor to edit the descriptions. Maybe you want to change it to say "a black puppy is running in a field of tall grass". A lifelike synthetic voice immediately changes the audio description to match your edits. You have your choice of 65 different voices (we don't use any robot-sounding voices). For the sake of 285 million blind and visually impaired people, make all your videos accessible by adding audio descriptions. Video accessibility is essential for full inclusion in our society, in education, government communications, and information of all kinds. Start now—it's easy, fast, and affordable. Let's make the world more accessible.

ADLab PRO Project asked some of the top experts in the field what makes "quality" in audio description. Here are their answers! Measuring quality in the context of audio description is tricky. That's because quality has traditionally been linked to customer satisfaction. But in the case of audio description, viewers can't be considered buyers because they can't choose between different products or services. They have no choice but to listen to a program with or without audio description. In 2017, The ADLAB PRO project conducted an interview to gather insights on the quality of audio description from a diverse range of participants: university professors, scholars, and experienced audio describers. Here are their answers on what creates a high-quality AD: 1) Let the AD be voiced by a voice artist 🎤 The AD narration should be neither too flat nor too emotional, with the right pace and intonation. Human voices are better than synthetic, but not everyone is a voice talent. 2) A good audio mixing process is essential 💾 Audio description should blend with the soundtrack and dialogues. Knowing the medium used to deliver the audiovisual product is key to achieving an excellent audio mix. 3) “Enough, not too much” and “Silence is also important” 🖌 A balance of description is needed in audiovisual content to ensure immersion without overwhelming the audience. Too much information risks losing the audience's mental pleasure. ADs should be balanced with the existing audio-visual content to create a complete mental picture of the content on the screen. 4) “Fit for purpose“ 💭 A good audio description is and reflects the essence of the production of the audiovisual content. 5) Set a high standard for audio description and use any available tools to make it better so that blind people can enjoy the same things as everyone else. Here you can find the Interview: https://lnkd.in/dnz-KfZi I’d absolutely love to hear your thoughts on this! ❤️ Sources: Respondents interviewed for Additional Video Quality, included in ADLAB PRO Course Materials - Module 1, 2017a Fryer, L., & Wakczak, A. How to Handle TEXT ON SCREEN in Audio Description? #ADLAB Guidelines According to the ADLAB GUIDELINES, text-on-screen refers to any written language that appears on the screen, including opening and end credits, titles, intertitles, and other superimposed texts. How can you handle text on screen in your AD? ⚡ STEP 1: DETERMINE what TYPE of on-screen text you are dealing with: - Opening or closing credits - Titles, intertitles, superimposed titles (may refer to spatio-temporal setting or to a character) - Logos with text - Text on other diegetic supports (such as the classic T-shirt that is terribly important to the scene, with a special country-specific pun that will make your characters laugh for a minute). - Subtitles. They are to be considered a special issue: check about audio subtitle CONSIDER that these written elements can be: - Diegetic: part of the scene, such as a text message or wall poster, letters, emails. - Non-diegetic: added during the editing process, such as opening or closing credits, logos with text, titles, intertitles, superimposed titles. ⚡STEP 2: Think about the audio description script: 1) Determine the FUNCTION and RELEVANCE of the on-screen text within the narrative of the audiovisual product. 2) LOOK at the text: determine whether the stylistic and typographical features have a narrative function or contain intertextual references. 3) Determine if the information provided by the on-screen text is ALREADY provided by other means (such as dialogue). Ask yourself: Is the information UNIQUE? Understand whether the information conveyed by the written language is unique, such as a message from a secret lover that is not explicitly spoken. Is the information REDUNDANT? such as a sign indicating the name of the place the characters are about to reach and have just mentioned. ⚡ Step 3: Create the Audio Description script: - Decide if the information needs to be delivered verbally through AD. - Decide HOW to indicate that a text will appear on the screen: add an explanation (A title reads...), change the intonation, use a different voice (male/female), use some sound indicators or integrate the content into the AD (in 2008, a man...). - Decide HOW you want to convey the information: literally, summarized, paraphrased. - Decide WHEN to convey the information: Synchronously, before or after it appears on the screen, taking into account available silent gaps. Et voilà! Thank you, ADLAB project, for these amazing, simple, and research-based guidelines! I’d love to hear your thoughts about this! The Power of Audio: Enhancing Visual Experiences Through Sound 🎧🎬 Audio is a cornerstone of effective video editing, playing a crucial role in immersing viewers, conveying emotions, and enhancing storytelling. Let's explore the power of audio in video editing and how it contributes to creating impactful visual experiences. Sound design is a fundamental aspect of audio editing, involving the creation and manipulation of audio elements such as music, sound effects, voiceovers, and ambient sounds. By carefully crafting soundscapes that complement the visuals, editors can evoke emotions, set the mood, and create immersive environments that captivate audiences. The choice of music can greatly influence the tone and atmosphere of a video. Whether it's a cinematic score, upbeat background music, or subtle ambient sounds, selecting the right music enhances the emotional impact of the visuals and engages viewers on a deeper level. Sound effects add another layer of realism and depth to videos. From subtle environmental sounds to impactful effects like explosions or footsteps, well-incorporated sound effects enhance the storytelling and create a more immersive viewing experience. Audio mixing and mastering are essential steps in ensuring that all audio elements blend harmoniously and sound professional. Balancing audio levels, applying effects like equalization and compression, and eliminating background noise contribute to creating polished audio tracks that elevate the overall quality of the video. NEWS AND INFORMATION HIGH FIDELITY: AUDIBLE RIDES AUDIO BOOM WITH BIG INVESTMENTS IN ORIGINAL CONTENT (By Cynthia Littleton) Mother’s Day weekend 2019 marked a turning point in the young life of Madhuri Shekar. It all started two years before with a phone call from a woman named Kate Navin, then head of theater for Audible. Navin said she’d recently been armed with money to develop original works from emerging play- wrights, and she was calling to offer Shekar, just a year out of Juilliard, the chance to write. The only catch: Shekar’s play would have to be crafted as an audio-only production. Shekar’s answer to this challenge was “Evil Eye,” a 100-minute potboiler that revolves around daily telephone conversations between a mother in India and a daughter in Los Angeles. The finished play was released on Audible in May 2019. For Shekar, the impact on her career was immediate. Within weeks, she was negotiating a deal with Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Blumhouse for the movie version that premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2020. She never saw this coming — it had all felt to her like an experiment. “I had been looking for a challenge,” Shekar says. “I started from the point of thinking about what story I could tell that would really come alive for people hearing it as opposed to seeing it. There was a lot of playing with the boundaries of the form; there was so much I could do by immersing you in the voices of these two women.” [W]hile long-form audio used to be the province of dour-sounding NPR and BBC radio documentaries, the proliferation of titles and program formats has massively expanded the boundaries of audio-only storytelling. Podcasts, in particular, have become popular source material for TV and film development. They’re seen as a relatively low-cost way to incubate concepts and test out characters and worlds. But increasingly, audio-centric production companies such as Audible and Wondery (both owned by Amazon), Campside Media, Gimlet Media, Kast Media, Crooked Media, Pineapple Street Studios and The Podglomerate are building businesses where making money through audio is the primary focus. Audible has upped its game with original content by courting emerging writers...as well as established names. 💫 A Spotlight on AI Research at the Technion! 💫 Revolutionizing Audio Editing for Everyone! Until now, audio editing was exclusive to professionals with access to studios, mixing equipment, and expert knowledge. Can you imagine a future where with a simple textual description and automatic suggestions anyone could edit their recordings? In their recent paper accepted to ICML, researchers Hila Manor and Prof. Tomer Michaeli explore two approaches for zero-shot audio editing: ZEro-shot Text-based Audio (ZETA) editing and ZEro-shot UnSupervized (ZEUS) editing. These methods allow nonprofessional users to effortlessly edit audio and music signals without model training or fine-tuning — simply by leveraging a pre-trained diffusion model. ZETA editing, inspired by recent image domain techniques, allows users to describe desired changes using text. It unlocks various audio manipulation capabilities, from altering musical genres to modifying specific instruments. ZEUS editing, a novel unsupervised approach, uncovers semantically meaningful edits without supervision. When applied to music signals, ZEUS exposes a range of interesting modifications, including instrument participation control and melody improvisations - transformations indescribable by text. ZEUS and ZETA are based on a recent paper from the same group that introduced the edit-friendly DDPM inversion method. Given any signal, this method enables extracting the noise vectors that cause a pre-trained diffusion model to generate that signal. This allows editing the signal by using these noise vectors within the sampling process of the diffusion model, while drifting the diffusion towards the desired edit. In the text-based method, this is achieved by changing the text prompt supplied to the model during the sampling process. In the unsupervised method, in each diffusion step the output of the model is perturbed in the directions of the top principal components (PCs) of the posterior of the denoising task that the diffusion model attempts to solve. These principal components are efficiently computed based on the authors' previous work. Both approaches outperform existing state-of-the-art conditional models and zero-shot editing methods in terms of generating semantically meaningful modifications while remaining faithful to the original signal's structure. Explore samples, code, and an interactive Hugging Face demo for ZETA editing on the paper’s webpage: https://lnkd.in/ep5jH45M #AudioEditing #AI #MachineLearning #Technion #Innovation #TechNews Technion-The Faculty of ECE (The Andrew & Erna Viterbi Faculty of Electrical & Computer Engineering)
