Racing Icon - the Mazda 787B! A Group C race car built to compete in the World Sportscar Championship, the All Japan Sports Prototype Championship and at Le Mans. It took the win at Le Mans in 1991 behind the driving of Johnny Herbert, Volker Weidler and Bertrand Gachot. Making it the first Japanese built car to win Le Mans, a feat that took another 27 years to accomplish again when Toyota won Le Mans with the TS050 Hybrid LMP1 car in 2018. It is powered by a R26B, a 4-Rotor NA 2.6L making 700hp and 448lb-ft of torque (though it was capable of 900hp). That power was driven to the rear wheels via a 5-Speed Manual gearbox developed by Porsche. All this in a package weighing 1830lbs (830kgs). However, the 787B's real secret weapon was its reliability. Since it wasn't the fastest on the grid, Mazda relied on the fact it lasted. Especially in endurance races. They leaned into faster cornering, rather than sustained top speed that wears down cars. Which led them to their victory in '91. After the Le Mans winning season, this winning chassis (787B-002) was retired from service. It sat on display at the Otaru City Museum for much of its life, then it was sent to back to Mazda Headquarters. Now it makes its rounds at events/displays around the world, including Fuji Speedway where this photo was taken. Japanese titan - the Nissan R390 GT1 road car! A true one. This was the road car built to meet the homologation requirements in order to build and enter the racing version at Le Mans. This racing version was the R390 GT1. Up until that point, Nissan had sent GTRs to race in the BPR Global GT series. But as regulations began to change in the series, Porsche took advantage of a gap in the poorly written requirements that led them to spawn the GT1. Mercedes did the same with the CLK GTR and McLaren made a Longtail variant of their dominant F1 GTR. So the Nissan GTRs simply weren't fast enough to compete in the class anymore. So the R390 GT1 enters the cat. Nissan/Nismo developed the car in partnership with TWR (Tom Walkinshaw Racing). It used an updated version of the Nissan R89C's VRH35 aluminum 3.5L V8, which was tuned to Le Mans specifications, producing 641hp. This was mated to a 6-speed sequential transmission. The entire package came in at just north of 1000 kgs, or ruffly 2200 pounds. The road car seen here is the basis of the GT1 car. It was developed at the Nissan Technical Center in Atsugi, Japan, and featured the same engine as the race car, which was tweaked to 550hp for the road. That was still good for a 0-60 time of 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 220 km/h, which at the time was only behind the McLaren F1 and TVR Speed 12.
