🌍 If you've ever looked at the history of environmental policies, it goes back a surprisingly long way! Environmental concerns have shaped human societies for centuries, from the impact of deforestation to the pollution brought by industrialisation. In the UK, the Alkali Act of 1863 marked one of the earliest responses to chemical pollution. Fast forward to 1956, the Clean Air Act emerged after London’s Great Smog, a turning point in air quality legislation. The modern environmental movement took off in the 1960s, with Rachel Carson's Silent Spring sparking global awareness about pollution. This era saw governments worldwide prioritise environmental issues, and in 1970, the UK appointed Peter Walker as the world's first-ever Environment Minister. The European Union followed with its Environmental Action Programme in 1973, developing a framework for environmental protection across all sectors. Over the years, the UK has continued to lead in setting standards, passing the 2008 Climate Change Act, and committing to net-zero emissions by 2050, becoming a global example in climate governance. With environmental policies now shaping the future of global economies, every business should adopt a sustainability policy. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recently tightened standards for certain types of air pollutants, putting pressure on companies in high-emitting sectors to take additional steps to mitigate their output and become more transparent about the substances they release into the atmosphere.
