VR headsets: It looks like big tech is suddenly obsessed with this "viewpoint." Virtual reality is now affordable, albeit not free; the Apple Vision costs $3500 per device, and Meta has its own VR set as well. Apple unveiled its first mixed reality (MR) headset, Apple Vision Pro on June 5, 2023. This happened after Meta revealed its upcoming headset Meta Quest 3 in Meta Connect and it will start shipping on October 10, 2023. Apple Vision Pro is likely among the more underrated innovations of 2024.   At first glance, it seems like an expensive VR headset launched when the world is (mostly) over the metaverse hype.   However, Apple doesn’t call it a VR Headset at all. In fact, it has carefully avoided using terms like VR in its marketing.   It's because the Vision Pro isn't just a VR headset - it's a potential substitute for our screens.   An average US household for instance, juggles roughly 7 physical screens including 2 televisions, 1 desktop monitor and tablets/phones making up the rest.   Depending on use, that is roughly $250 - $1500 per year spent on screens.   Vision Pro's Passthrough (allowing users to see their surroundings even with the device on) and Spatial Computing features (allowing users to pin active virtual screens and control them with simple gestures) could potentially reduce the need for physical screens by up to 50%: saving $125-$750 per year.   This figure will improve with future advancements in Vision Pro.   Also worth noting is the value to be created from reducing screens in professional spaces and lowering e-waste from screen disposal (US Environmental Protection Agency estimates nearly 30-40 million PCs are discarded yearly)   Could the Vision Pro be kicking off a new screenless era? #apple #applevisionpro #mixedreality #virtualreality #sustainability #tech Image: Apple

Too expensive, too heavy: Apple is likely to give up development of the Vision Pro 2 In 2024, Apple launched its eagerly awaited mixed reality glasses, the Apple Vision Pro, and fans and some experts quickly spoke of a revolution in the VR/AR field. But it is now clear with the consequences for the successor glasses. Apple's mixed reality: fascinating, but ... A fascinating experience, but too heavy, uncomfortable and far too expensive. That is the summary of the tests and user opinions on the Apple Vision Pro. In terms of price in particular, the mixed reality headset is beyond good and evil, because in this country (Apple Vision Pro is available in Germany from July 12th) the device costs at least 4000 euros. Even in Cupertino they know that this is far too high a price and there is little chance that this class of device will prevail if only a few people can afford an Apple Vision Pro. This is also the reason why the Californian company has now stopped developing the Apple Vision Pro 2. This is what The Information reports, and writes that Apple has changed its priorities. Apple Vision "Light" However, this does not mean that it is giving up on such headsets. Rather, Apple no longer wants to develop the Apple Vision Pro 2, but instead wants to build an affordable device. The Information cites sources in the supply chain and a person directly involved. It is not surprising that price is the most important argument, because Apple knows that the market for such an expensive headset is limited. The company is targeting around $1,600 for the cheaper Apple Vision glasses, which are due to hit the market before the end of 2025. The slimmed-down model will probably have fewer cameras and smaller speakers, and will also weigh less. But Apple is apparently struggling with one point, because it has not managed to reduce the cost of the device's displays.

For weeks now, I’ve been asking friends, relatives, and many strangers if they’ll buy an Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset. The answers have ranged from an enthusiastic “Yes!” to an adamant “No”, with more than a few people having no idea what I’m talking about. The decision as to whether or not to buy Apple’s first mixed-reality headset, and experience Apple’s first new product category in over a decade, is more than a spur-of-the-moment one. There are considerations to be made, many of which I’ve been spinning in my own brain (while my brain wonders if it wants itself anywhere near this thing). As I see it, it boils down to a handful of pros and cons.
