DAILY BONUS: Purple Streak Named S.T.E.V.E. (foxweather.com): Strange dancing pillars of purple light in the sky continue to dazzle aurora light fans. Is it the aurora borealis? Is it space debris? No. It’s Steve. Named by an aurora lights enthusiast Facebook group in 2016, this relatively new type of space weather phenomenon is known as "Steve," a nickname the group coined. Like all things in space science, these purple streaks of light needed a fun acronym. The lights are now known as 'STEVE', which stands for Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement. https://lnkd.in/ehM_wvCw

Do you know that the astrolabe was a multifunctional device used for centuries in European and Islamic cultures? It was used for astronomical calculations, telling time, mapping stars, and even making decisions. The astrolabe was invented in the Hellenistic civilization by Apollonius of Perga between 220 and 150 BC, often attributed to Hipparchus. The device was later adopted by mariners and used in celestial navigation. The astrolabe was a circular stack of sliding features all embedded within a disk called a “mater”. A round plate containing a two-dimensional projection of the Earth’s latitudinal lines sits within the mater and, over that plate, another circular feature called the “rete” contains the locations of certain well-known stars in the sky. Over that, a straight rule pivots around to line up with time measurements along the edge of the mater.

New Post: Saturn’s ‘Death Star’ moon has been keeping a big secret - https://lnkd.in/gkDvDdb4 - A moon of Saturn that bears a striking resemblance to Star Wars' Death Star has been holding a secret — and it's not the Galactic Empire's favorite world-obliterating space weapon. Mimas, one of the planet's 146 moons, most likely has an ocean brewing under its entire icy shell, according to new evidence recently published in the journal Nature. Though previous research has suggested the tiny moon could have water beneath its lackluster surface, the study, led by astronomer Valéry Lainey at the Paris Observatory, presents the most compelling case yet, contradicting other theories that its interior is solid. That makes Mimas the ninth place in the solar system believed to have sloshy seas — counting Earth among the lot, of course. "The existence of a recently formed liquid water ocean makes Mimas a prime candidate for study for researchers investigating the origin of life," said Nick Cooper, co-author of the study from Queen Mary University of London, in a statement. Mimas is just the latest in a growing list of ocean worlds in the sun's neighborhood. Others include Saturn's moons Titan and Enceladus; Jupiter's moons Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto; Neptune's moon Triton; and Pluto. Mimas' ocean comes as a surprise to many astronomers because it lacks the outward signs: It doesn't have fractures on the surface or geysers spraying water, like Enceladus and Europa, or a thick atmosphere, like Titan, said Lainey during a livestreamed SETI Institute interview this week. That makes it "one of the most unlikely places" an astronomer would think to find liquid water — at least at first glance, he said. "It looks like a very rigid, cold satellite," he said. "You might say 'boring.'" Now the 250-mile-wide moon could give astronomers new insight into the early, primitive phases of ocean worlds. While Earth's seas are about 4 billion years old — meaning they're thought to have existed almost since the time the planet formed — Mimas' water might only be 5 to 15 million years old. "It looks like a very rigid, cold satellite. You might say 'boring.'" The research team was able to estimate this age using prior data from the Cassini spacecraft on the moon's tidal interactions with Saturn. The NASA probe explored Saturn and its moons between 2004 and 2017. Crucially, by observing wobbles and slight changes in the moon's orbit, scientists could reason that a hidden ocean exists. The information also helped them estimate its depth. Lainey's team combined the Cassini observations with

Incredible. About 20 seconds into this video by Anton Petrov (one of the best ‘casts about new discoveries in space) you’ll see an amazing image from the Webb Space Telescope. A very deep field photo that dives into the faint past beyond redshift-3, this one image captures eighty(!) supernovae taking place ‘simultaneously’ (as seen from Earth today) in a single, narrow frame. Each in a different galaxy. https://lnkd.in/gzQTQ6dV There are so many things this tells us. 1. Since any one supernova only remains stand-out visible for a few weeks (maybe a bit longer in infrared, the Webb specialty), this means there ‘are’ absolute gobs of them happening out there… 2. …or there used to be gobs of them, since we are in this case peering way back in time, making it a wee bit less surprising, since early star formation must have led to a great many giant, 1st generation stars, of the kind the burn bright and then blow themselves up with core-collapse supernovas… seeding later generations with heavier elements. Certainly, nothing like this rate is occurring “today”… (our redshift<1 era.) 3. Since each of the circled supernova happened in a different galaxy… and it had to be happening a lot, in order for these brief bursts to be so common in one patch of deep sky, it gives you a truly boggling idea how many galaxies there are. A mind stretch that I can only perform for a few seconds at a time. That we are a civilization capable of building such a wonder as the Webb… and perceiving and marveling at such wonders… fills me with joy! And also fear that we might throw it all away, in a fit of anti-modernity angst, Pushed by powerful fools bent on restoring us to feudalism’s darkness.
