Humans have always gravitated toward a routine since the days of hunter-gatherers. We didn’t spend our days pontificating about high-minded ideas because we didn’t have the advantages of modern life. Our routines were a survival mechanism, almost predetermined. Now, with the luxury of abundant food and resources, we have time to focus on more than just survival. Even with all of that, we still fall into routines. These routines often mark the difference between healthy and unhealthy people. I’ve made a routine of waking up before 5 AM, so I can work out before work. I fast until noon, eat balanced meals with lean protein and vegetables from noon to six, and go to bed early to do it all again. That routine required a lot of intention to build. If you want a healthy routine, you have to play an active role in building it. This is me smiling at 6:38 PM as I take a ride to the grocery store during my Me TIME 😊 And yes, that is how it is written on my calendar from 6 to 7. This time is blocked out just for me!! Let me set the scene for you… This is after a long day of ✅meditation, ✅exercise, ✅cooking ✅breakfast, ✅working on my website , ✅grocery shopping, ✅washing clothes, ✅preparing dinner and ✅hosting a wellness workshop. 🤯 And yes, I did say grocery shopping earlier, but that was with the kids! This time I’m alone lol. Can you relate? Having so much to do but yet you feel like there’s just not enough time? ⏰⌛️Luckily, I can have a smile on my face because I figured out how to manage my time effectively.💯 I am able to Woosah and grab hold of my peace while juggling life’s demands. Clean Out Your Fridge! Just about an hour ago I finished cleaning out a relative's fridge and found a jar of pickles way in the back that had been sitting there for four years. Yikes. I'm not sure how the old stuff got overlooked for that long… someone must have looked back there and thought, "I'll get to that someday." When I tell people to stay still and rest, I don’t mean to sit sedentary for THAT long. But even something as simple as cleaning the fridge can be a zen activity for some people. Staying still, sitting, relaxing, hanging out doesn’t have to be boring. I’m sure I didn’t burn many calories cleaning out the fridge, it was actually kind of relaxing. And while I was doing it, I upped my intellectual health (had to look up online how to get the shelves out) and relational health (I employed my boys to help me review expiration dates). When you start to see your activities or rest periods as opportunities for categorical health boosters, you see the world differently. There are so many opportunities to be intentional about it. Next time you think about being still, remember that it doesn't have to mean doing nothing. Even a simple task like cleaning out the fridge can have unexpected benefits.
