By 2028, Helion is expected to start producing electricity from its first fusion commercial power plant, which will provide electricity to Microsoft. On the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, on September 26th each year, Shoaa organization calls on the Algerian government to ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons #TPNW. This treaty promotes nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, as well as taking measures to rehabilitate former nuclear test sites and provide assistance to victims of nuclear testing. This also provides an opportunity to request assistance (technical, humanitarian, financial, etc.) from other state parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. #Algeria

In this article, I review Counterforce Warfighting, a strategy that suggests that between conventional war and MAD there’s a level of limited nuclear war where victory is possible. In this strategies, the two powers fight a war by exclusively targeting the other’s counterforce capabilities, with the winner being the one with the most remaining. I discuss the theory behind the strategy, the historical context in which it was developed, and the criticisms of it.

Bolton: The bottom line is that the U.S. faces “two nuclear peer adversaries for the first time” in a rapidly expanding threat environment. Maintaining and improving our nuclear-deterrence force against China and Russia will require significant effort.

As treaties against nuclear weapons are beginning to falter and as global conflicts are beginning to stir, a new nuclear arms race appears to be brewing. 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝘀 also dives into how the U.S. is considering expanding, rather than reducing, its nuclear arsenal.

"After 14 years of Tory mismanagement, the UK finds itself bereft of an energy strategy," writes Jonathon Porritt. "This was finally confirmed in the release of the Government’s new Nuclear Roadmap. At one level, it’s just the same old, same old, the latest in a very long line of PR-driven, more or less fantastical wishlists for new nuclear in the UK. But at another, it’s a total revelation. For years, a small group of dedicated academics and campaigners have suggested that the UK Government’s Nuclear Energy Strategy is being driven more by the UK’s continuing commitment to an “independent” nuclear weapons capability than by any authoritative energy analysis. For an equal number of years, this was aggressively rebutted by one Energy Minister after another, both Tory and Labour. The new Nuclear Roadmap dramatically changes all that. It sets to one side any pretence that the links between our civil nuclear programme and our military defence needs were anything other than small-scale – and of no material strategic significance. With quite startling transparency and clarity, the Roadmap not only reveals the full extent of those links, but positively celebrates that co-dependency as a massive plus in our ambition to achieve a Net Zero economy by 2050. https://lnkd.in/eFqt6p_s

State Signatories to the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) are meeting in Vienna next week at the Treaty's Preparatory Commission. Russia's withdrawal of its domestic ratification for the Treaty will be high on their agenda. Russia continues to express support for the Treaty as a State Signatory. But their actions reverse signs of momentum towards the Treaty's entry into force, and casts fresh doubts on the robustness of their support for the end of nuclear testing. I have some recommendations at VERTIC about how State Signatories (including Russia) can build confidence in their support for the Treaty and the end of explosive nuclear weapon tests, including: (i) Reiterating the various binding legal commitments they have made to support the Treaty; and (ii) Supporting voluntary confidence-building and clarification measures.
