Rare Disease Day is observed annually on the rarest day of the year (February 29th or 28th when it’s not a leap year) and it brings individuals, families, caregivers, healthcare professionals, researchers, policymakers, and the general public together to raise awareness and take action for this vulnerable population. Lewiston was born with a rare genetic disease, Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and we have experienced firsthand the challenges of navigating a rare disease. There is often an overwhelming sense of fear, uncertainty, isolation, frustration, grief, and financial strain. However, there is also hope, joy, empowerment and resilience. Day 1 of the 100-Mile Challenge in February: Today, I kicked off the challenge with a 10.56-mile ride around the BWI Trail. As I pedaled, thoughts of my journey with Type 2 Diabetes flooded my mind. Since my diagnosis in September 2022, with an A1c of 13.7, I've been on a mission to reclaim my health. Despite facing high blood pressure, a rapid heart rate, and other symptoms that put me at risk for cardiac events, I refuse to let diabetes define me. Instead, I'm using fundraisers like this to motivate myself to prioritize my health. Participating in this fundraiser isn't just about me—it's about the countless others battling diabetes every day. With every pedal, I'm not only inching closer to my goal but also raising awareness and funds for critical diabetes research. Please join me in supporting the American Diabetes Association's mission. Link here: https://lnkd.in/gTtYSByQ - Nearly 1/3 of all residents in Greater Pittsburgh have uncontrolled hypertension – this impacts every organ in the body. - Another ¼ of residents are not even aware that they have high blood pressure – That is enough people to fill PNC Park 10 times! - Black residents in Greater Pittsburgh experience nutrition insecurity at 4 times the rate of their white counterparts. - There are over 27 food deserts in Allegheny County alone (and I have personally seen the impacts of this on my patients.) - Only 43% of women in Greater Pittsburgh know that cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer of women.

The Sickle Cell disease (SCD) affects more than 100,000 people in the United States and 20 million worldwide. Hi all - I don’t typically share personal stories here, but I’m sharing our story in the hopes of raising awareness and resources for our remarkable little warrior and others like him. 💜 We are parents to a remarkable 8-year-old little boy. He is a delightful little human who is obsessed with Legos, loves tennis, and is the most voracious reader I’ve ever met. He’s funny, kind, bright, and uniquely his own person. And he is fighting Chronic Pancreatitis, secondary to a spink1 genetic mutation. Chronic Pancreatitis, for those who might not know, is characterized by inflammation and degeneration of the pancreas organ, it is notoriously painful, and the disease is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. It relentlessly gets worse with time, and the medical interventions available dwindle quickly. It is extremely rare in children, and currently, there is no cure. We are sharing our story to extend an invitation for you to join us in a mission of hope. “Mission: Cure’s” incredible work supports research for Pancreatitis, with a focus on finding a cure.
