When I was a dancer, I learned a technique to choreograph performances creatively. Essentially, we were told to give ourselves a restriction. Something like: don't use your left arm, you can't face the right side of the room, or you have to do everything seated. Of course none of this would get used in the final performance. It would be a little bizarre to see a bunch of dancers performing only facing the right side of the room. But what it did was create a problem for us to solve. And gave us an opportunity to allow our creativity to work around it. What solutions we could come up with, how we could still create artful choreography with a set of forced restrictions. From new angles, your creativity can find new pathways. Next time you can't find your way around a problem, give yourself a restriction. Maybe you can only write your sales copy from the roof of your office building (safely). Or you're not allowed to use the word 'I', or you're only allowed to write your website copy in haiku. Purely as an exercise (don't accidentally leave only haikus on your website 🤣🤣 unless it's part of the brand 🤷♀️🤪), give yourself the gift of a new perspective. What to post. As I said last week I’m trying to make more of an effort here and have been building the network as they say (hello new people👋🏻). Honestly though I’m still trying to figure the best way to use LinkedIn and what to post about. As an Editor, you’d think it easy to post edit and animation work, but a large percentage of my work is protected by NDAs* and can’t be showcased here. So, I’ve still got my thinking hat on. I’ve got some ideas, just figuring out the best way to share them 🧠 *Nothing against NDAs of course, I think if you’re asked to sign one that’s a good thing and shows you’re trusted. I need to get better at this… and so do you 👇🏻 - Posting our own content is tough, let alone posting consistently. Especially with lots of work, day to day bits and running a business. It’s quite easy to beat yourself up because you feel you’re not doing enough. I do it quite often and have been recently. It’s important to remember that if there is a time where you haven’t been posting consistently that’s absolutely fine. The time will come. If you can, allocate and blockout time periods to batch film and prepare content to post on your portfolio or social pages. That’s a process I found helpful and try to implement as much as I can. I’m definitely in the pursuit of being easier on myself and not putting pressure on posting. I’d encourage you to do the same! After all, I’d rather be timeless than trending.
