Curious - does anyone have good resources for teaching older adults about online security and privacy? I am considering starting up an in-person working group aimed at older adults in my community. Take the burden off of their GenX / Milennial children. Narrow, action-centred focus - something like “bring your laptop to this community center, we will all sit down together and go through your Facebook account settings, security settings, etc.” Thoughts?

(2/2) Cont'd As parents/guardians, when it comes to safeguarding our children’s activities online, are we inadvertently (and increasingly) teaching our kids not to value their own digital privacy? Is their low tolerance of being tracked based on the fact that they’ve grown up being told (by us) that it’s normal for a loving relationship (of any kind) to have a form of monitoring embedded in it? Could this trend potentially have a negative affect later on in their lives where they believe it’s healthy to be monitored by their partner e.g. they’ve already experienced this from someone who loves them, so why not accept it from someone else who says they love them…. I recall the dreaded day when my daughter asked her dad and I about getting a phone; many of her primary school friends had been given phones c.2 years prior to her receiving one! There is no magic formula to parenting, so trying to navigate the potential threats that online usage posed resembled a minefield. Like so many parents, we laid down some ‘ground rules’ for Eva being able to have a phone. Maybe her adherence to these rules was due to the seismic adjustment in her life - i.e. the transition from primary to secondary school (which would include travelling alone on public transport for the first time) - who knows? Regardless, John and I chose to use this as an opportunity to have a discussion which incorporated broader life issues around the value of privacy, consent and understanding/setting boundaries. She fully understood that having a phone at her age was a privilege; something that could just as easily be taken away from her. In the end, we decided that our parent/child contract would be based on trust, and that we would help our daughter to make sensible decisions about what she should/shouldn’t broadcast. #safeguarding #safetyandsecurity #cybersecurityeducation #privacyawareness
